Full-time: Kiel 1-1 Elversberg

After a goalless first half, the match picked up pace in the second period and produced two goals. Therkelsen responded to Mokwa's opener in the 61st minute with the equaliser just two minutes later. Overall, the draw is a fair result. Kiel were slightly superior before the break, while Elversberg certainly had chances for a second goal after the restart. In their first match under Walter, Holstein put in a decent performance in the second half and take the point. For the visitors, however, these are two points lost in the promotion race.

Any energy left?

The final minutes have begun. Can one of the two teams still bag the three points or will it remain a draw? Currently, neither side seem to have the upper hand.

Immediate equaliser!

What a response! No goals for a long time and then suddenly two. Kiel don't want to chase the deficit for long. A long ball from goalkeeper Weiner finds Therkelsen, who wins the aerial duel and powers his way through, drives into the penalty area and gives Krisstof no chance.

Goooooal!

In the style of a top team, Elversberg take the lead here. Petkov jogs forward and sets up Günther. He breaks through on the left wing and serves Mokwa at the far post, who has an easy job and just needs to tap it in.

Too far

Even after the change of ends, Kiel seem a bit more active, but the next attack fizzles out. A high ball to the right wing is too far for Kaprálik to chase down.

Kiel's turn

Tohumcu simply cannot be separated from the ball and finds Harres in the middle. From about 10 metres, the Kiel player hammers a shot on the turn. His attempt ultimately goes well wide.

Elversberg on front foot

Pherai gets a shot away immediately. The ball is blocked by Ivezić for a corner and Pherai vehemently appeals for handball. After brief contact with the VAR, referee Wienefeld waves it away. The subsequent corner comes to nothing.

Half-time: Kiel 0-0 Elversberg

It's been a tough test of patience so far in Kiel. Both teams have applied pressure on each other in phases, but clear goalscoring opportunities remain scarce. Towards the end of the first half, Holstein stepped up their game and created chances. They were clearly setting the tone in the closing minutes, but failed to score the opening goal, so it remains goalless as the teams head to the dressing rooms.

Kiel now clearly better

Tohumcu curls a free-kick beautifully with his right foot. Meffert gets to the ball but fails to produce a dangerous finish.

The corner...

...is delivered sharply by Tolkin and is dangerous. Once again Elversberg have to clear the ball away.
44'

Next set piece

Rohr ducks under the ball and Kaprálik is initially through. However, the Elversberg player manages to make up for his mistake and clears it for a corner.

Chances coming now

Kelati, who has been lively in the last few minutes, gets a good shot away. However, the save from Kristof is even better and the Elversberg keeper clears it with his fingertips. Holstein cannot capitalise from the corner.
41'

Elversberg lacking control

The Saarlanders keep trying to make things happen but are failing up against the Storks' defence. This time Tolkin clears the pass from Condé.

The best chance!

A brilliant cross from the left and Kelati has space, tries to volley it first time. However, the ball is very difficult to control. The Kiel man manages it anyway and puts the ball just wide of the right post.

26'

Kiel again

Nekic tries to deliver a cross from the half-space, but the Kiel player hits it far too high.
23'

Chances rather scarce

While both teams initially played with a lot of pressure and repeatedly got into the opposition box, there is little of that to be seen at the moment. The match is taking place between the two penalty areas.
21'

Big difference

The Storks have already registered 40 more passes than their visitors.

Walter's game plan

As expected, Walter has switched to a back four. However, this is not uncharted territory for the Storks, as they have already played with a back four five times this season, most recently at the beginning of February at Hannover.
15'

First quarter of an hour gone

Both teams are currently managing their game and keep trying. They're doing quite well up to the penalty area, but ultimately the teams are lacking high-quality opportunities.
12'

Good idea

Poręba with a lovely idea as the Elversberg player chips the ball from outside the box into the penalty area, but can't find a teammate.
10'

First corner...

...also for Kiel. Tolkin delivers the ball from the right. There's a shot from outside the box, but Zimmerschied manages to clear it.
8'

That was quick

After a ball recovery by Condé, the visitors quickly counter-attack. In the end, Petkov's shot goes wide. The subsequent corner yields nothing.
7'

Now at the other end

Pherai directs the ball towards the goal of the new goalkeeper Weiner. The Kiel keeper has the ball safely in his hands.
5'

High intensity

Both teams are not hiding here. Kaprálik puts pressure on Mickelson and steals the ball from him. The Kiel player serves Tohumcu, who can get a low shot away. Elversberg's goalkeeper Kristof is there to save it.

Will it be similar?

Marcel Rapp stood on the touchline at Kiel for over four and a half years. Now his era has ended and Walter is taking over the Storks for the second time. Under Rapp, Holstein achieved promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time. Can Walter build on that success?

Bernhardsson set for comeback

Kiel's Bernhardsson has been absent since the end of November and was sorely missed. Today, Kiel's best assist provider is back in the squad for the first time.

Two familiar faces

Only two players from Walter's first tenure are still, or more precisely, back. Jonas Meffert, who was also Walter's player at HSV, and Weiner. Weiner was still a youngster back then and occasionally sat on the bench for the first team, later developing into a regular keeper. In 2025/26, he has so far only been the cup goalkeeper (four appearances) and stood between the posts in the league only on Matchday 21 during the 1-3 defeat in Hannover, replacing the absent Krumrey.
camera-photo

Walter changes things up

Kiel's returning new coach Tim Walter makes significant changes, swapping the goalkeeper (Timon Weiner for Jonas Krumrey) and bringing in Adrián Kaprálik, Marko Ivezić (pictured) and Umut Tohumcu. Whether there will also be a new system remains to be seen. At HSV and during his first spell at Kiel, Walter preferably relied on a back four, a holding midfielder and two central midfielders (4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3).

Never change a winning team

Vincent Wagner sends the same XI onto the pitch that started last week's home victory against Braunschweig. Playmaker Bambasé Conté is still out and will once again be replaced by Immanuël Pherai (pictured).

Vincent Wagner on facing Kiel

"We are curious to see how much Tim Walter has been able to implement already. If I remember the last time we met, it was an evenly matched game. That's what I expect here as well. A strong opponent awaits us."

Change of management

On Tuesday, Kiel announced that they had parted ways with head coach Marcel Rapp, ending a four-and-a-half-year collaboration. Rapp's successor was announced on the same day, with Tim Walter taking the reins with immediate effect. For the 50-year-old, this marks his second spell as Kiel coach after also overseeing the Storks for the 2018/19 season.

Condé's Kiel history

Amara Condé, now of Elversberg, made his professional debut as a 20-year-old for Kiel. In the 2017/18 season, he played six matches in Bundesliga 2 and two in the DFB Cup for the Storks.

First time for everything

No player in the current Kiel squad has ever scored a goal against Elversberg in Bundesliga 2.

Storks' struggles against the Saarlanders

Kiel have won only one of their five competitive matches against Elversberg - a 2-0 away victory back in March 2024 in Bundesliga 2 - and to this day have never beaten the Saarlanders on home soil. In their only two home games against Elversberg, the Storks achieved a 1-1 draw at home in October 2023 - with loyal Elversberg servant Luca Schnellbacher scoring for the visitors that day - and lost 2-1 in the 3. Liga all the way back in 2013.
