Bochum's Uwe Rösler is celebrating his 50th match as a head coach in Bundesliga 2, with 34 of those coming in charge of today's opponents Fortuna during the 2020/21 season.

Having picked up a fifth yellow card last time out, Wittek serves a one-game suspension. Taking his place is winter arrival Mikkel Rakneberg, who makes his first start for the Ruhr club. Strompf and Miyoshi are back after their suspension, and Holtmann is fit again, so all three return to the starting line-up. Top scorer Onyeka, who had started all 17 competitive matches under Uwe Rösler, takes his place among the substitutes for the first time this evening.

Given the many absences in defence, Anfang will likely be relieved that Suso, who was recently ill, has declared himself fit. Suso has already played as a number six, number eight and on the left, but in the last home match against Münster he filled in on the left of the back three, which he seems set to do again today. Winter signing Ljubicic (who scored two Bundesliga goals for Union Berlin in January) is also finally fit and makes the bench for the first time, where he is joined by Raimund, who is also back in the squad after a four-week absence.

The thriller that took place the last time these sides met in Düsseldorf will live long in the memory. On 27 May 2024, after Fortuna had taken a 3-0 away win from the first leg of the relegation/promotion play-off, Düsseldorf were in the driving seat in the tie. However, Bochum levelled the scores by putting three past the hosts in normal time before prevailing in the penalty shootout to stay in the Bundesliga!

Shared history

Prior to taking over at Bochum, Uwe Rösler had managed 10 different clubs, but only one other in Germany. Back in January 2020, he succeeded Friedhelm Funkel at Fortuna, before being relegated from the Bundesliga and missing out on promotion the following season by finishing fifth in Bundesliga 2.
