There's still a big chunk of the season to go, and the Miners have big ambitions.

Schalke has Magdeburg in a stranglehold now. Karaman chases down a long diagonal ball, keeps his composure and awareness to find Džeko in the middle. The Bosnian shoots first time, but Reimann is there to make the save.

Musonda's header back to Reimann is a little short. Karaman senses the opportunity, nips in and scores his second goal of the match – could that be the goal that seals the deal?

And another new signing scores! And who provided the assist for Ljubicic? Džeko, of course! He leaves Nollenberger for dead in the penalty area and then keeps his composure to find his team-mate arriving in the space behind. It's now 4-2 – but that doesn't mean anything in this match!

Karaman has scored 35 second-division goals in a Schalke shirt - he's now drawn level with Terodde and is just one goal behind Schalke's record goalscorer Anderbrügge.

Karaman confidently converts his fifth penalty of the season. A low powerful shot into the left corner beats Reimann, who dives in the opposite direction.

With all the focus on Džeko, it's important to note the impact of another recent signing. Aouchiche provoked the own goal and has now provided an assist, after also setting up a goal in the last home match against Dresden.

Džeko has had the most shots on goal (three) and contested the most duels. And now he's scored his first header for Schalke.

That one's on target, though! After a one-two on the left flank, Aouchiche delivers a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, where Džeko heads the ball firmly into the net. And that's exactly why Schalke signed him!

A familiar sight: Becker delivers another long throw-in into the penalty area, which Katić meets with a header, but it's straight into the arms of Reimann.

Now Ljubicic sets up Džeko, whose weak shot also fails to beat Reimann.

Džeko plays the ball on to Ljubicic, who suddenly finds himself running clear on goal. Reimann makes himself big, though, and narrows the angle, and the Schalke player's shot rolls narrowly past the left post.

Aouchiche has plenty of space on the left and looks to deliver the ball into the middle. He manages to do so, but the Magdeburg rearguard quickly get back behind the ball and are able to clear the danger.

At the start of the second half of the season, Schalke secured a 0-0 draw at Hertha, but since then they have conceded at least one goal in each of their five matches.

Tough luck for Magdeburg, as Hugonet deflects the ball into his own net! Schalke are provisionally back at the top of the league, although there is a long way to go.

Becker sends a long throw-in into the Magdeburg penalty area. Via a deflection, the ball lands at the feet of Katić, who shoots from around 20 yards, but he puts it well wide.

El-Faouzi shoots from about 20 yards out, but the ball flies wide of the right-hand post. Muslić still gives him a round of applause for the effort.

Now the Miners get a set piece. Magdeburg manage to clear the incoming free-kick for a corner, which eventually comes to nothing.
