Schalke celebrate with their fans

Full-time: Schalke 5-3 Magdeburg

A spectacular match draws to a close! Fans were treated to eight goals at the Veltins-Arena today, with the Royal Blues scoring five of them, thanks in part to excellent performances from recent signings Džeko and Aouchiche, and a brace from captain Karaman. The hosts return to the top of the table, while the relegation-threatened visitors can take heart from a battling performance.

Džeko's day is done

The Schalke superstar leaves the pitch to great applause, to be replaced by Gomis.

Sylla makes his presence felt!

First, the substitute is denied by Reimann. Then he decides not to take the rebound himself, but instead lays it off to Aouchiche, who also narrowly misses!

Triple substitution for Schalke

There's still a big chunk of the season to go, and the Miners have big ambitions.
71'

Another chance right away

Schalke has Magdeburg in a stranglehold now. Karaman chases down a long diagonal ball, keeps his composure and awareness to find Džeko in the middle. The Bosnian shoots first time, but Reimann is there to make the save.
68'

Karaman adds another!

Musonda's header back to Reimann is a little short. Karaman senses the opportunity, nips in and scores his second goal of the match – could that be the goal that seals the deal?

Schalke restore their two-goal margin!

And another new signing scores! And who provided the assist for Ljubicic? Džeko, of course! He leaves Nollenberger for dead in the penalty area and then keeps his composure to find his team-mate arriving in the space behind. It's now 4-2 – but that doesn't mean anything in this match!

Half-time: Schalke 2-1 Magdeburg

It's been a back-and-forth affair, but Schalke hold a 2-1 lead at the break courtesy of goals by recent transfers Aouchiche and Džeko. As things stand, Schalke are top of the table, but if the first half is anything to go by, that could still all change in the second 45.

Magdeburg still battling

The visitors launch another quick counter-attack. Hugonet finds Ulrich, who lays it off to Zukowski, but the midfielder's shot goes wide of the left post.
45'

Aouchiche impact

With all the focus on Džeko, it's important to note the impact of another recent signing. Aouchiche provoked the own goal and has now provided an assist, after also setting up a goal in the last home match against Dresden.
43'

The Džeko effect

Džeko has had the most shots on goal (three) and contested the most duels. And now he's scored his first header for Schalke.
39'

Džekooooo!

That one's on target, though! After a one-two on the left flank, Aouchiche delivers a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, where Džeko heads the ball firmly into the net. And that's exactly why Schalke signed him!

Close one!

Džeko has space on the right, creates room for himself with a nice feint and tries to curl the ball from just outside the penalty area into the left-hand corner of the net. He's pretty unlucky, as his effort shaves the post!
36'

No problem for Reimann

A familiar sight: Becker delivers another long throw-in into the penalty area, which Katić meets with a header, but it's straight into the arms of Reimann.

Magdeburg have not seen much of the ball, but when they have possession, they move quickly: Atik swiftly releases Zukowski, whose shot is blocked by Kuruçay, causing the ball to loop up into Müller's arms.

Returning the favour

Now Ljubicic sets up Džeko, whose weak shot also fails to beat Reimann.

Ljubicic goes close

Džeko plays the ball on to Ljubicic, who suddenly finds himself running clear on goal. Reimann makes himself big, though, and narrows the angle, and the Schalke player's shot rolls narrowly past the left post.
24'

Chance on the counter

Aouchiche has plenty of space on the left and looks to deliver the ball into the middle. He manages to do so, but the Magdeburg rearguard quickly get back behind the ball and are able to clear the danger.
23'

Strong away form

That leveller was Magdeburg's 14th goal in their last five away matches.
22'

Another game without a clean sheet

At the start of the second half of the season, Schalke secured a 0-0 draw at Hertha, but since then they have conceded at least one goal in each of their five matches.
17'

A quick equaliser!

Schalke's temporary return to the top of the table didn't last long! At the conclusion of a pacey counter-attack, Nollenberger curls the ball into the far corner beautifully for 1-1.

10'

Things calming down

There was a high tempo to the start of the match, but now things have settled down a bit. Schalke are keeping possession of the ball, but can't find a gap in Magdeburg's tight defensive unit.
6'

El-Faouzi tries his luck

El-Faouzi shoots from about 20 yards out, but the ball flies wide of the right-hand post. Muslić still gives him a round of applause for the effort.
5'

Schalke's turn

Now the Miners get a set piece. Magdeburg manage to clear the incoming free-kick for a corner, which eventually comes to nothing.

...and in Europe

European title winners Schalke and Magdeburg also crossed swords on the continental stage. The latter prevailed 7-3 on aggregate in the second round of the UEFA Cup in 1977/78. Jürgen Pommerenke (twice) and Wolfgang Steinbach scored for East Germany's Magdeburg in the 3-1 victory in front of over 70,000 spectators at the Parkstadion, while Erwin Kremers netted for Schalke.

Another encounter took place in December 2000 in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup, when Jörg Böhme scored from the penalty spot to secure a 1-0 victory for then Bundesliga side Schalke against fourth-tier Magdeburg.

Thrilling encounters

After five Bundesliga 2 encounters, these sides have two wins apiece. Schalke's two home matches in the second tier against Magdeburg were spectacular, with seven goals scored in each. In 2024/25, Magdeburg won 5-2 in Gelsenkirchen as Martijn Kaars (pictured) scored four, while Schalke triumphed 4-3 in 2023/24 after trailing 2-0.
