Full time: Fortuna Düsseldorf 0-2 Schalke

Schalke defend top spot confidently against battling Düsseldorf. Karaman put the visitors ahead from the spot before Becker sealed the victory. Even after the sending-off, the hosts showed fighting spirit and didn't give up.

Sylla!

The striker has plenty of space in the box on the left after a brilliant outside-of-the-foot pass from El-Faouzi, but his shot towards the near post is saved by Kastenmeier's foot.

First goal for Becker

For the 20-year-old, it's his first goal in the second tier.
82'

The decisive moment???

Gomis plays the ball to Becker on the half-left, the Schalke player leaves Zimmermann standing with a quick move and coolly slots it past Kastenmeier into the left corner.

Substitutions on both sides

Fresh legs are coming on for the final phase.
79'

Is one goal enough again?

It would be Schalke's fifth 1-0 victory this season.
77'

Fortuna fighting with ten men

Since the sending-off, it is 3-0 for shots on goal for Düsseldorf.
75'

Rasmussen!

The substitute strongly wins the ball against Katić. Itten picks it up and sends Rasmussen through. The Dane's low shot lands just wide of the right post.
72'

Still brave

Rasmussen throws himself fully into his first offensive action. The hosts are doing well despite being a man down, while Schalke are rather struggling.
70'

First Fortuna substitution

Rasmussen comes into the match. Can he still help Düsseldorf take something from this game?
69'

Will they keep a clean sheet?

Will Schalke keep a clean sheet for the eighth time this season? That would be twice as many clean sheets after just 15 matchdays as in the entire previous season, when they only managed it four times in 34 matches.

Second yellow card for Oberdorf

Two fouls today, punished twice
63'

Itten!

The next attempt: El Azzouzi does well in the central area and plays it to Itten, who turns and puts the ball wide to the left of the S04 goal.
61'

Düsseldorf don't give up

Even a man down, the hosts continue to try, but of course, it's not getting any easier now.
59'

Another long numerical advantage

In their last away match in Münster, Schalke also had a man advantage, curiously also from the 55th minute (when Preußen keeper Schenk saw red). Schalke didn't capitalise on that advantage, drawing 0-0.
56'

Second sending-off

In his first four seasons in the second division, he was never sent off, but in 2025/26, it's already his second sending-off! On matchday 1 in Bielefeld, he also received a second yellow card.

Oberdorf is off!

The defender steps on Antwi-Adjei's foot during a challenge, and he sees his second yellow card and is sent off.
54'

Schalke fighting

Once again, not brilliant but very effective football from Schalke. The visitors are winning significantly more duels and have also covered more ground, investing a lot as always.

Good attempt!

Muslija chases down a long ball on the right, nutmegs his man and aims for the far corner - wide and the flag is up.

The second half starts.
Kick-off!

Half-time: Düsseldorf 0-1 Schalke

Fortuna Düsseldorf were the better side for much of the half, but that penalty just before the break has rather altered things. The Fortuna players will be kicking themselves for failing to take some great chances.

Schalke's top scorer

A former Fortuna player scores

That's Karman's 35th goal in his 100th competitive match for Schalke - and that against the club where he once played for three years.

Converted - GOOOAL!

The captain fires his shot into the right-hand side of the goal. Kastenmeier guessed the right way, but couldn't quite reach it.

Penalty!

After a long throw-in from the right, Kuruçay heads the ball in the middle – but Kastenmeier reacts with a strong reflex save. Katić looks to convert the rebound, but Tim Oberdorf intervenes with a high boot and catches the Schalke player in the head.
40'

Too robust

Muslija receives a yellow card for a forceful challenge on Antwi-Adjei.
40'

Too far

Sylla, hardly noticeable so far, lays it off to El-Faouzi on the right, who wants to play it into the middle - but the ball had already gone out for a goal kick.
camera-photo

There's always a Schalke player in the way!

37'

And another block

Once again Kastenmeier plays the ball long upfield, where Muslija only manages to hit a Schalke defender instead of Karius' goal.
35'

Fortuna on top

Almost 60% possession and 6-3 shots on goal for the hosts - that is certainly not untypical for Schalke, who haven't stormed to the top with gung-ho football.

Itten is found with a cross and nods towards the goal from a few metres out, but cannot put enough power behind his attempt.

Karaman!

The Schalke captain cuts in from the left at the edge of the penalty area and has a go. Kastemeier has to stretch himself to the fullest, but manages to claw the ball out of his left corner.

Itten back in the centre

The Fortuna striker is immediately involved again, receives the ball in the box under close pressure but can't get a shot on target. Oberdorf's shot then ultimately lands wide of the S04 goal.
25'

Interruption

Itten needs treatment after a cut and is having his head bandaged.
23'

Blocked

Muslija tries again, but his central attempt is defused by Pöpperl.
camera-photo

Düsseldorf surprising

So far, Fortuna are making the stronger impression against the league leaders.
18'

Muslija still waiting

He last scored on Matchday 5 in Münster but has been goalless since then. He managed three goals in his first five competitive matches for Fortuna, but hasn't scored any since.

camera-professional-play-symbol

Off target

Muslija is sent through down the right channel, takes the ball past Katić and immediately shoots – but the ball flies well into the stands.
14'

Schalke's turn

The visitors are now also becoming more dangerous in the final third Karaman builds up steam on the left and pokes the ball towards the near post, but Kastenmeier clears it for the first corner of the game.
13'

First booking

El-Faouzi arrives in late on Suso in the midfield, catching him on the foot. The Schalke man is subsequently shown a yellow card for his challenge.
9'

Double chance

First, Itten narrowly fails to connect with a cross from the right before Suso's subsequent attempt is blocked.
7'

Dynamic start

Both teams have set a high tempo from the beginning. Düsseldorf keep immediately looking to push forward, while Schalke are responding with a combative, more defensive approach.
4'

Karius comes off his line

Kastenmeier tries again to get the ball high up the pitch. Raimund had already started his run in behind, but the Schalke keeper anticipates and confidently heads the ball out of the danger zone.
2'

On the front foot

Itten is immediately sought with a long ball, but the flag goes up quickly for offside.
1'

Underway in Düsseldorf!

The ball is rolling here in Düsseldorf. Fortuna want to topple the favourites whilst Schalke are aiming to defend the top spot.
Kick-off!

Schalke's talent factory

With Pöpperl, Ayhan, Wallentowitz and Becker, there are four players from Schalke's youth academy in the starting eleven who had not played a single second-division match before this season!
camera-photo

Schalke Jubilee

S04 captain Kenan Karaman is making his 100th competitive appearance for the Royal Blues today (34 goals so far).

The next S04 youngster

For Schalke, Ron Schallenberg is missing for the first time this season, and Miron Muslić is throwing his next talent into the deep end. Paul Pöpperl (22 years old) played his first five minutes in the second division last week, and is now immediately called upon to start. He gained some professional experience in the second half of last season when he was on loan at Viktoria Köln, making nine appearances in the third division.

Egouli a good omen?

The 2.04-metre giant has only been in the Fortuna starting eleven twice before. In those two matches, Düsseldorf collected four points and conceded only one goal (2-1 in Paderborn, 0-0 against Karlsruhe).

More on that Fortuna side

Markus Anfang has to do without Tim Breithaupt, but can call upon Anouar El Azzouzi again, who was previously suspended due to yellow cards. Also new to the team is Elias Egouli, who replaces Moritz Heyer. A system change to a 4-2-3-1 also seems possible.
camera-photo

Miron Muslić on facing Düsseldorf

"We won't be deceived by the current table. This Düsseldorf team has significantly more quality than they've shown recently. We're prepared for that."
camera-photo

Markus Anfang on facing Schalke

"We know that it will be a difficult match and Schalke are coming with a lot of confidence. They have an intense way of playing football. We need to play against that and need to defend ourselves against it."

Familiar face

Fortuna head coach Markus Anfang transferred as a player from Düsseldorf to Schalke in 1997, playing alongside Youri Mulder (now director of professional football at S04), Jens Lehmann, Olaf Thon and Marc Wilmots. However, under Huub Stevens, he only made five competitive appearances.

Champions once upon a time

Fortuna became German champions for the only time in 1933, winning the final in Cologne against Schalke 3-0.

It's been a while...

The 3-1 home victory in August 2021 was Schalke's last win against Fortuna and also their only three points in eight Bundesliga 2 encounters. Schalke have lost all four away matches in Düsseldorf – nowhere else have S04 played so often in the Bundesliga 2 without earning any points.

Fortuna's run

Düsseldorf are unbeaten in five matches against Schalke and have won their last four home games against S04 across all competitions.
