Full time: Kaiserslautern 4-1 Kiel

The hosts' efficiency in the first half - when Naatan Skyttä scored a hat-trick - came to the fore against a Kiel side who had their chances in this game. Overall, it was a deserved victory for Kaiserslautern, albeit by a slightly inflated margin.

Top save

Once again, the hosts finds their match in Krumrey. Abiama gets a shot away from close range on the right but the Kiel keeper sticks out his leg.

Another yellow card

Karlsruhe debutant Roslyng goes in too aggressively on Raschl in a challenge in midfield.

Telling

Telling
It's interesting that the most efficient passers for the hosts are the offensive players, whilst for the Storks it's primarily the defenders and even keeper Krumrey who are creating danger.

Someone wants to prove himself

Four goals for Kaiserslautern, but none yet today from the team's regular goalscorer Prtajin. He's tryingeverything, having taken the most shots of any player (6).
77'

The will is there

Three goals down, one man less - Kiel would have every reason to give up. But the team is fighting and still trying somehow to score a goal back.

Unnecessary

Bernhardsson blocks Haas unfairly and receives a yellow card.

Orchestrator

Şahin's performance is somewhat overshadowed by Skyttä's strong display. In nearly two-thirds of his actions on the ball, he kept his composure and was able to withstand the pressure.

Fresh legs

Kaprálik was a bit isolated recently, so Harres comes on for him. Centre-back Nekic also enters the match.

Almost the fifth

After a corner, Robinson gets himself into the six-yard box and fails to get the ball over the line. Prtajin also ultimately fails to beat Krumrey.

Substitution in defence

Since Da Gyamfi is already on a yellow card, Lieberknecht doesn't want to take any risks. Elvedi comes on for him.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The quality of chances doesn't really justify Kaiserslautern leading by such a margin. However, Kiel have missed their big chances here.

Double substitution

Rapp doesn't want to take any risks and takes off the cautioned Schwab. Additionally, Knudsen comes on for Müller.

Free kick

Bernhardsson is fouled on the left wing. The resulting free kick doesn't yield anything. Lautern are currently trying to control the game and maintain composure.

Man down

Zec, who received a yellow card in the first half for dissent, hits Ritter in the face with his elbow near his own penalty area.

Off the woodwork

Müller has plenty of space, runs alone towards the Kaiserslautern goal, rounds Krahl and looks to slot it in with his right foot. The angle is too tight and he hits the post.

Hat-trick Skyttä!

It's a treble for Skyttä. Again it's a quick counter-attack after winning the ball at the halfway line. From the right, the ball goes to left winger Haas, who is stopped by Zec. The Finn stays in the action, grabs the ball and smashes it with his left foot into the bottom left corner.

Intense game

Both teams are giving no quarter so far. After less than 10 seconds in possession, the opponent is typically there to win the ball back. Nevertheless, it's a fair contest.

Bookings

Things are getting a bit hectic now. Kunze stops a Kiel counter-attack, then Gyamfi refuses to give the ball back and also sees yellow.

Defensive anomaly

Having failed to concede more than two goals per match so far this season, Kiel have now shipped three after 38 minutes.
camera-photo

Another for Kaiserslautern

The two-goal margin is restored. From the right, Kunze takes a throw-in and delivers into the penalty area. Sirch tries to power it in, but the ball is deflected and flies to the far post. Haas reacts quickest there and pushes the ball over the line.

Yellow card for the midfield engine

As Kiel fail to clear the corner properly, Skyttä is in possession. At the left corner flag, he is unfairly brought down by Schwab. The Finn holds his head and receives treatment. After a brief interruption, the match continues.

Again down the right

Adiama attempts a counter-attack and wins a corner for the hosts. Ritter delivers it into the box, but can't find a teammate.
33'

Kiel keep their foot on the gas

The visitors now sense an opportunity. After pulling a goal back, they are pressing Kaiserslautern high up the pitch and pushing for the equaliser. However, shots on goal are still in short supply.

Penalty

Kaprálik is sent through with a pass from his own half. The striker drives into the penalty area from the left. Gyamfi goes in too heavily with his arms on the man. The referee awards a penalty.

Foul on Ritter

Another counter-attack moment from the hosts. Ritter receives the ball on the left wing but is brought down by Zec. The free kick is quickly chipped into the penalty area towards Haas, but Karlsruhe manage to clear it.

Hosts well on top

Kaiserslautern have made a lightning start. They're keeping Kiel away from their own goal and repeatedly managing to create danger with quick counter-attacks.

Corner

On the right wing, the substitute Abiama pops up. After a throw-in, he wins a corner thanks to his dribbling. The corner aims for Prtajin but only finds a Kiel player's head.

Just like 17 years ago

The last time Kaiserslautern scored twice in the opening 11 minutes in Bundesliga 2 was in April 2009 in Osnabrück, at the Bremer Brücke stadium, where it remained a 2-0 until the end.

Another opportunity

Again it's a cross from the left side that causes danger in the Kiel penalty area. Ritter chips it into the middle, Prtajin controls it with his chest and is just barely prevented from getting a shot away.
14'

Injury-enforced change

Shortly after the goal, Joly clutches his left thigh. The Red Devils' top assist provider has to come off. Abiama comes on.
camera-photo

And another!

A dream start for the home side. Skyttä initiates the counter-attack, dribbling from his own half and looking for Prtajin. His return pass is a bit sloppy, but reaches Şahin. The playmaker serves the Finn with a brilliant through ball and from there, he is ice-cold with his strong left foot.

Hosts lead

A cross from the left wing and Prtajin heads it up in the air. Ritter positions his body between opponent and ball, and then Skyttä reacts quickest. With a first-time shot, he smashes the ball into the net from seven metres out.

Unchallenged

Therkelsen breaks free from the high press in his own half and runs the entire pitch. As he's still not being challenged at the edge of the Kaiserslautern penalty area, he goes for goal from a central position. The ball whistles just past the left post.
4'

Ritter standing out

The new man at Kaiserslautern is making an immediate impact. He's pushing forward on the right wing, pressing a lot and has already won a corner.

Kick-off!

Müller for Rosenboom

Just one change for the visitors: Müller starts for the first time since Matchday 7, replacing Rosenboom in the starting eleven. Müller is likely to play as the centre-forward, with Kapralik and Bernhardsson each dropping back one position.

Ritter starts

There is only one change for Kaiserslautern compared to the defeat against Hertha. Captain Ritter, who was on the bench for the last two matches and a total of six times this season already, moves into the starting eleven in place of Hanslik.

Marcel Rapp on facing Lautern

“The focus is in Kaiserslautern, which will be a tough challenge for us. We want to have a common mindset so that we’re all ready to go when we’re out on the pitch in Kaiserslautern on Sunday. We just have to keep working hard, doing our thing and creating chances.”
camera-photo

Torsten Lieberknecht on facing Kiel

"I've had the opportunity to play against Marcel Rapp and his team several times before. These were always tactically shaped matches, but both teams also play with strong man-marking, so it'll be an intense fixture. Kiel were relegated from the Bundesliga and had to sort themselves out at the beginning of the season. But when you look at their quality, they are by no means average."

Mixed memories

Torsten Lieberknecht has never lost as a head coach against Marcel Rapp teams, but experienced one of his most bitter moments against Kiel. On 13 May 2018, a 6-2 defeat as Eintracht Braunschweig head coach sealed their relegation from the second tier. His contract was invalid in 3. Liga, so he left the club the following day after 10 years in charge.

End of the road

Kiel have visited the Betzenberg four times so far, losing three before taking all three points in November 2023, in what was Dirk Schuster's final game as Kaiserslautern head coach.

Stats favours Red Devils

Kaiserslautern have won six of their nine competitive matches against Kiel. In the last encounter in April 2024, the Palatinate side celebrated a 3-1 away victory at the Förde, with former Kiel player Daniel Hanslik among the goalscorers.
