Paraguay started on the front foot, then dropped extremely deep after five minutes. Nagelsmann's men dominated but struggled to create anything of note, with half-chances for Undav, Havertz and Nmecha. To make matters worse, Enciso capitalised on the South Americans' first attacking move for 40 minutes. The question remains: What will Germany come up with against this deep defensive block in the second half?

Corner again Germany's fifth corner. Again it comes to nothing.

Germany again! Following another corner, Kimmich gets a shot off from a tight angle on the left, but he doesn't really connect and Gill can gather.

Nmecha! Via a series of deflections the ball somehow finds its way to Nmecha, who shoots first time, but the deflected ball trickles past the left post.

Mountain to climb Paraguay haven't lost a World Cup game in which they scored first since 2002 against Spain.

Stoppage time Five minutes of added time.

Now it gets really tough The lead will hardly discourage Paraguay from sticking to their disruptive style of play. He can't quite keep hold of the ball, however.

Japan remain dangerous on the counter Brazil are clearly more dominant, but the underdogs still have something to offer. Maeda gets past Danilo but plays the ball too far ahead of himself.

Fast-paced and all to play for The second half makes up a little for the rather monotonous first period. It's end-to-end...the match seems completely open.

Vinicius denied! What a moment from the dribbling maestro. Tomiyasu is left for dead with an ankle-breaker, and the chipped shot from a few yards out, coming from the half-left channel, is tipped onto the post by Suzuki. What a save that was!

Casemiro doesn't miss this time! The next cross, this time from Gabriel, flies through the penalty area towards the back post. Casemiro aims better this time and gives Suzuki no chance with a powerful header. That's the equaliser!

⚽ 56' Casemiro (1-1)

Casemiro denied! Brazil are growing stronger and really should really have equalised. After another cross goes into a dangerous area, this time Casemiro only needs to head it in from close range, but somehow three Japanese players, including the goalkeeper, clear it off the line.

Guimarães! Brazil's best player has their best chance of the game so far. Danilo delivers a silky cross into the crowded penalty area and the midfielder heads powerfully towards the right corner. Suzuki then makes a strong save to keep it at 1-0.

Lively start Endrick breaks free down the right and drives towards the box, but his through ball to Vinicius is overhit. Suzuki is there to collect.

Danilo booked The right back stops a Japanese counter-attack after shoving Maeda to the ground.

Tenacious play Even at the start of the second half, the Japanese aren't giving their counterparts any time to breathe.

The second half begins with a sub The injured Paqueta is replaced by top talent Endrick for Brazil.

Half-time: Brazil 0-1 Japan Japan lead at the break after a terrific strike from Mainz midfielder Sano. Brazil have dominated the ball but have laregely been reduced to long-range shots that haven't really troubled Suzuki. The five-time world champions have 45 minutes to try and turn the tide - and to deprive Japan of their first-ever World Cup knockout stage win.

Strong positioning The pace is lacking from Brazil. Cunha receives the ball in the centre of the pitch, but is immediately surrounded by three Japanese players and is dispossessed.

Injury Time There will be four minutes added on.

Tactical foul Former Frankfurt midfielder Kamada stops a counter-attack and is consequently shown a yellow card.

Brazil frustrated The favourites look tense. Japan are now pushing out well from the back and keeping Brazil away from their own goal. However, the Selecao still have plenty of time to get back on level terms.

Japan's tactical plan pays off Defensively, Japan head coach Moriyasu has come up with something pretty effective so far. Vinicius's side of the pitch is crowded, but the right side with Rayan has barely been exploited by Brazil. What remains are long-range, speculative shots.

Sano's stunner sends Japan into raptures

Vini on the charge Vinicius tries his luck from distance, but this shot is too central. The reliable Suzuki holds on to the bouncing ball.

How will the Selecao respond? The favourites now really need to raise their game. The first response: an attack down the left flank, which ends in another free kick.

Debut goal It's Sano's first goal for his nation – and on this stage of all places. Not a bad way to do it...

Sano!!! What a goal! The man who has been at the centre of everything so far has stunned Brazil. He wins the ball back himself in midfield and then marches towards the opposition goal. The Mainz man put everything into this move, eventually finishing perfectly from 25 yards. The ball arrows low into the bottom left corner and Alisson is left with no chance.

⚽ 29' Kaishu Sano (0-1)

Shot for Japan Ueda rises high, but doesn't get enough control on the header and it goes well over.

Drinks break over The match is back underway. Japan win a corner straight away.

Sano in focus The Mainz player is once again at the centre of attention. Following his early booking, he has frequently been called upon and has been involved in many duels. In midfield, he had made a strong clearance in a follow-up challenge just a few minutes ago, but now near his own goal line he is somewhat fortunate that a tackle against Cunha goes unpunished once again.

Tactical phase Japan are sitting deep, lying in wait for counter-attacks. Brazil are trying to break them down through their play, but the underdogs are looking more composed as the match progresses.

An asset for the Brazilians The Newcastle United midfielder has already had three attempts on goal, driving both fans and teammates forward in equal measure.

Deflected Kamada wants to sneak the free kick under the wall, but the attempt is blocked and turned away for a corner.

Risky challenge Casemiro receives a card for a foul just inches outside his own penalty area.

Double chance! Brazil are growing stronger. Cunha's long-range shot is deflected by Suzuki around the left post, and from the resulting corner Guimarães heads just wide.

Sano picks up an early yellow card Not intentional, but clearly late. Sano stepped on Vinicius's foot and duly recieves the first booking of the match.

Dominant start Brazil have been much the better side so far. Guimarães has a go at goal again, but his long-range effort only finds the head of teammate Paquetá.

Alert The only offensive action from the Japanese side so far ends with Marquinhos winning a duel against Maeda.

Dangerous free kick A Brazilian free kick from the left half-space floats into the penalty area. In the second half, Canada were by far the better team and had several chances to take the lead. In the final third, however, they were far too wasteful. With Davies came a breath of fresh air before a moment of true quality from Eustáquio got the job done. South Africa are eliminated, but they certainly didn't go down without a fight.

South Africa throw the kitchen sink Bafana Bafana have pushed everyone forward in search of an equaliser. Still no sign of Davies, however...

Slick counter A move that starts with the South African goalkeeper very nearly opens Canada up. Elanga's equaliser has turned their performance up a notch whilst the hydration break hasn't disrupted their play. Potter's side are on top here, and Japan are struggling to break out of their defensive block.

Pushing for the go-ahead goal Ayari clips the ball in, but Japan are able to clear their lines. Sweden then win a corner but Suzuki is able to punch clear. Sema then sees his follow-up effort blocked.

Gyökeres halted Substitute Taniguchi is shown Japan's first yellow for a foul on Gyökeres, which gives Sweden a free-kick in a dangerous position.

Changes for both teams Borussia Dortmund's Svensson, and Sema, enter the fray for Sweden, whilst Nagatomo and Watanabe replace Nakamura and Seko for Japan.

As things stand With around 20 minutes remaining, Japan will play Brazil in the round of 32 while Sweden remain in a strong position to advance as one of eight best third-placed teams on four points.

Play resumes Suzuki gets play back under way.

Hydration break Play comes to a halt whilst both sets of players take on fluids. What a game we have here.

Double change Japan respond by making two changes with the introduction of Ito and Ogawa in place of Dōan and Ueda.

<img src="https://assets.bundesliga.com/contender/2026/5/GettyImages-2283345639.jpg?crop=0px,0px,3195px,2129px" alt="Equaliser! Maeda's glancing header was an early warning sign but the best chance arrived through Nakamura, who forced Zetterström into a superb save down low. It's all to play for in the second half.

Cleared Sweden are unable to capitalise on the chance, allowing Japan to clear.

Gyökeres forces corner A chance for Sweden here just before the break after Gyökeres' effort takes two deflections.

Stoppage time The fourth official has signalled five additional minutes.

Nakamura denied! That's more like it! Maeda cushions the ball for Nakamura, who curls his right-footed effort in a crowded penalty area towards the bottom corner which leaves Zetterström scrambling. Sweden's No.1 tips the ball behind for a corner, which doesn't amount to anything.

From range Neither side has been able to create a clear-cut chance, but Sugawara tests Zetterström from distance with a low driven shot, although Sweden's custodian is equal to it.

Another change Japan make a change of their own. Taniguchi replaces former Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Itakura, who gives the armband to Dōan.

Forced change That's Hien's game over. The Atalanta defender is replaced by Bergvall, who slots into midfield, meaning that Lindelöf will drop into the back three.

Hien receives treatment Sugawara whips in a dangerous cross which leaves the Swedish defence scrambling. Hien, in an attempt to intercept the ball, goes down with no one around him.

First booking Japan have plenty of pace in their front line and that was evident there. Ueda turns Hien and puts on the afterburners, but the Swedish defender halts Japan's attack and is shown the game's first yellow card.

Route one Sugawara plays a long diagonal ball into the path of Ueda, but the Feyenoord striker is unable to shrug off to Sweden defenders.

Play resumes We're back under way as both teams go in search of the lead.

Hydration break Play comes to a halt whilst both sets of players take on fluids.

Glancing header Japan work it brilliantly down the left but Maeda glances his header over Zetterström's crossbar after a pinpoint cross from Nakamura.

Level pegging There's nothing to separate the two nations so far.
