Full-time: Leverkusen 2-0 Union Berlin

Back to back three points for Leverkusen as they comfortably beat Union Berlin on home turf. Goals came at the right moments from Poku and Kofane with the visitors posing very little threat in the end. The Werkself will go into the international break on a happy note.

Not long to go

Four minutes of added time has been signalled.

Hofmann chips it...to nobody

The Leverkusen midfielder has space on the right inside the Union box but his cutback is met by nobody inside the area as he crosses blindly.

Belocian is back

It's a first appearance of the season for the young French defender who comes on for the goalscorer Poku.
85'

Just not his day

The American does everything in the Union box as he meets a deflection from a Union defender on the volley, but once again, there's no goal for him.
83'

Waiting for the final whistle

Leverkusen are knocking it around nicely but the game is looking well past done. Just a case of waiting for the final whistle for the cheering home fans.
81'

Goalscorer goes off

The home fans will be very happy with his contributions today as he goes off to a round of applause.
78'

Leverkusen keeping Union honest

Despite the lead, the Leverkusen forwards are doing well to keep Union on their toes. Tillman charges down Rønnow which leads to the Dane clearing it out for a throw-in.
77'

First of the season

The Union defender's frustrations are there to see in that challenge, which sees him get a yellow.
75'

Skillful work from Arthur

The Brazilian does really well to eat up the pressure from Köhn - twisting and turning past the Union wingback to allow Leverkusen to switch play and cooly continue building out.
73'

Tillman tries his luck

The American lines another one up from range. Same result this time though. Rønnow has little to do.
72'

More changes and fresh legs

Reinforcements for Union come in the form of Haberer and Rothe. They've got some 20 minutes to affect change. Can it happen for Union?
69'

Reunion for Andrich

He comes on to replace the Argentinian Fernández in midfield. A reunion for the midfield machine who spent many years on the books of Union Berlin before switching to the BayArena.
68'

Yellow for the captain

Now it's the Union captain who sees yellow for pulling back Poku.
67'

Big block from Flekken!

That's better from Union in attack, Köhn navigates into the Leverkusen box and strikes a dipping effort. It goes straight at Flekken though and is comfortably saved.
66'

Leite into the book

The Portugal defender goes into Tillman cynically to prevent a Leverkusen counter, rightly sees a yellow for his offence.
64'

Triple changes

Baumgart has seen enough. Two attacking changes and one in midfield, with Ansah and Skarke bringing real pace to proceedings. Can they help the visitors get one back?
62'

Game settling down

Last couple of minutes have seen the game slow down nicely for the home side, as they control the momentum with their passing around the Union block.

Maza hits the post!

The Algerian is found bursting into the area by a through-ball from Tillman and his well-struck shot can only meet the Union upright. The rebound is struck first-time by Arthur, whose effort is blocked. Leverkusen are knocking hard at the door
56'

Moving with confidence

The ball is fizzing about nicely around the back from Leverkusen, Union's pressing is doing little to shake their flow.
camera-photo

Leverkusen enjoying themselves

García thinks he's capped off a superb Leverkusen counter with a goal but for the offside flag to cancel it. The home side are looking slick on the break with the likes of Poku and Kofane charging forward. A third goal doesn't seem too far away.
camera-photo

First start and FIRST GOAL!

It's a gift for Kofane from Union keeper Rønnow to get his first Bundesliga goal! The Cameroon forward pressed down on the Dane and a short pass from him goes right at Kofane, who skips past the keeper to double the Leverkusen lead.

Tillman skies it

The American midfielder is found perfectly at the edge of the box by a cutback from Arthur on the break. But his shot goes high and wide. A disappointing outcome.

We go again

The home side kick us off for the second 45 and there's a double-change from Hjulmand. Maza and Arthur replace the wingbacks.

Half-time: Leverkusen 1-0 Union Berlin

An eventful first 45 to say the least. The home side's patience was rewarded at the half hour thanks to Poku, who scored his second of the season. Baumgart's Union could have scored their own earlier but go into the break behind and looking to get back into it.

Köhn needing attention

Now it's a Union man who is down and hurt - left wingback Köhn is looking a bit shook after a collision with Tillman in the box. He looks okay to carry on though.

Kofane into the book

The youngster refuses to back off from the Union free-kick taker after a foul, and the referee is not happy with that. First yellow of the afternoon.

Stretchered off

The Leverkusen captain is getting stretchered off the field after going down earlier, as the home faithful give him a loud applause of encouragement.
43'

Kofane nearly again

Leverkusen continue to dominate as we approach half-time. This time Aleix García threads a lovely through pass into the Union box for Kofane, but the big Dane in the visitors goal is alert to Kofane's pace and gathers well.
38'

Grimaldo from a free-kick

The stadium holds it's breath for a Grimaldo free-kick, as the Spaniard steps up from within 30 yards out. But this time, it sails over the Union bar.
camera-photo

Opener once again

That's the sixth time in as many Bundesliga games this season that the Werkself have taken the lead. Can they go on and double it from here?
camera-photo

Poku breaks the deadlock!

For the second week running, the Dutchman finds the back of the net to score a decisive goal for Leverkusen! He started the move that led to the goal as the Leverkusen outfielders move nicely against an unsettled Union backline. A well-placed cutback from Vázquez finds Poku in front of Kofane, whose shot bundles past Rønnow to open the scoring!

Another wasteful move

It's neat passing between the lines once again from Leverkusen, but they're really struggling to find the final ball.

Kofane just wide!

A superb burst of speed from the Cameroonian who was all on his own found by a through ball from Badé, in a 1v1 duel against Querfeld in the channels once again. This time, the Leverkusen striker does extremely well to hold off the challenge and shooting, but it goes just past the Union post.

Temporarily without Badé

Leverkusen are without the Frenchman briefly, as he fixes some kind of padding on his waist before re-entering the action.
24'

The numbers tell the story

Leverkusen have the lion share of the ball so far and the numbers reflect a ball-dominance. However, there's been little in the way of clear-cut chances.

Patience and frustrations

Baumgart's team are really well setup to frustrate the home side here. Hjulmand is asking the centre-backs to step up into advanced positions but even that is doing little to unsettle the Iron Ones.
18'

Grimaldo strikes!

Leverkusen now seeing more of it . It's the Werkself captain who thinks long and hard about a shot from just outside the box and centrally. He unleashes a well-struck curler with his left foot, which flies just over Rønnow's bar.
16'

Big opportunity...almost!

A dangerous delivery from Union's set-piece king Trimmel causes some disturbance in the Leverkusen six-yard area, Doekhi tries to get a touch on the knock-on but is ultimately flagged for offside.
camera-photo

Rønnow alert to the danger!

The Dane stands alert to prevent a header back into a danger area from Tillman after a well-placed set-piece from Grimaldo. The corner after that leads to nothing though, and play will restart.
camera-photo

Setting the tone

The early exchanges are setting a clear tone for the rest of the game. Union happy to sit in their low block and counter directly with pace and strength. Meanwhile, Hjlumand's side have the task of breaking them down, or risk facing threat on the counter-attack.
0:23
camera-professional-play-symbol

On target from Jeong!

The South Korean does well to compose himself in a 1v1 scenario after Union break long and direct. Burke wins the first contact and threads it to Jeong, whose shot is well saved by Flekken.
10'

Block after block

A Leverkusen set-piece from Grimaldo gives the home team a series of opportunities to test Rønnow from range but each of the attempts is securely blocked.
8'

Threat on the break

That looked like a promising counter for the home side, who break through Poku and García. The ball reaches the feet of Kofane, who is held up by Querfeld, killing any threat for now.
6'

Leverkusen moving it nicely

Some nice passing moves in build-up here from Hjulmand's Leverkusen, as they try to find the final killer pass behind Union's defensive lines.
5'

Jeong down

Play is paused momentarily. Jeong is down after a contest and feeling something. Early concern for Baumgart on the sidelines.
3'

Ping pong start

The opening couple of minutes have seen the ball spend a great deal of time in the air. A handball from Fernández breaks that sequence and Union will have a free-kick at the halfway line.

More on both teams

There's minimal changes to note from both camps. For Union, coach Baumgart has made two changes with Jeong replacing Ansah in attack and Schäfer starting for Haberer. As for Hjulmand's Leverkusen, an injury to Axel Tape sees Vázquez return to the fold.

Kasper Hjulmand on facing Union Berlin

"It's very important to go into the international break with a good feeling. We should be fired up to get three points at home."
camera-photo

Still unbeaten

Leverkusen made it five competitive games without loss under Kasper Hjulmand after drawing 1-1 wth PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League in midweek. Christian Kofane was on target for the Werkself, making history as the club's youngest scorer in the competition, aged 19 years and 67 days.

Exequiel Palacios has signed a new contract at the BayArena, extending his current deal by a further two years to summer 2030. "It's a great feeling to have been part of this process. Now we want to continue making history with this team," said the 26-year-old World Cup winner. Sporting director Simon Rolfes added: "Pala's value for us has grown each season. He's been a key player in recent years and will take on more responsibility in our competitive team in the future."

"We know what we need to improve, firstly in our processes, but also in terms of our activity in certain phases. We hope we can improve the things against Leverkusen that we didn't do well against Hamburg."
camera-photo

Past meetings

Leverkusen have won three of their last five meetings with Union, and have only ever lost to the capital club once over 15 total encounters. Their last defeat to Union came in the 2020/21 season, when Cedric Teuchert scored the only goal of the game to give them a 1-0 win.
camera-photo

On a roll

Leverkusen come into the game unbeaten in four league matches, with a 2-1 win over St. Pauli their most recent result. They're just one point ahead of Union, who have been equally impressive. They've already beaten VfB Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt and arrive at the BayArena on the back of a goalless draw with promoted Hamburg.
