End of the affair?

Both of these teams have been enchanted with goals for quite some time, but that might be about to end as we edge towards the end of this game. Wolfsburg have scored at least one goal in their last 20 Bundesliga home games while Leverkusen have found the net in their last 26 away games.

The Leverkusen goalkeeper stands tall to beat out Tiago Tomás twice in quick succession. Wolfsburg's fans know their side will need to take advantage of one of these moments before the champions click into gear.

What a miss!

Leverkusen with a corner from the left and it's swung towards the far post, where Hincapié heads across the face. The ball flies towards Mukiele at speed, bounces off his head and zips over the bar. Mukiele was unmarked and right in front of goal there.
18'

A touch scrappy

This game is lacking fluidity, with several fouls in succession breaking up the play. That hasn't stopped both sets of fans making plenty of noise, however. Terrific atmosphere.
15'

Boniface booked

Victor Boniface grabs Vavro, who goes down. That's a booking for the Nigerian striker.
14'

Good build-up

Ralph Hasenhüttl will be more than happy with his team as they take this game to Leverkusen, who have yet to fully settle here. Given the amount of changes Bayer 04 are showing, that's perhaps not all that surprising.

Wolfsburg belief

Koulierakis, then, is denied what would have been a first Bundesliga goal since joining the Wolves from PAOK last August. The incident will have given Wolfsburg plenty of belief as they go about attacking the defending champions.

Goal ruled out

Konstantinos Koulierakis has all the time in the world to head high into the top corner and Wolfsburg celebrate what they think is the opening goal. Moments later, the effort is ruled out as the Greek was in an offside position.

Xabi Alonso on facing Wolfsburg

“It’ll be a very hard game, one of the hardest away games of the season. I felt at the start of the season they could have a good year. They’ve stabilised after some initial difficulties and have a clear style under Ralph Hasenhüttl.”
camera-photo

Ralph Hasenhüttl on facing Leverkusen

"Leverkusen barely have a weak spot in their squad. They have top players in every position. With Wirtz they have an outstanding player who can decide every game. Even though they played 120 minutes yesterday I didn't have the feeling that they were running on empty. They're a top team and they can keep going. As such, we expect a top performance from them and are preparing for that."

Deadly in attack

At the Volkswagen Arena, Wolfsburg's 43 goals for the season (a Wolves' record after 20 matchdays) will come up against Leverkusen's 49 goals (having only ever scored more last season).
camera-photo

Wolfsburg's transfer business

Similarly, Ralph Hasenhüttl made some smart moves in the transfer market. He brought in Danish duo Mads Roerslev (on loan from Brentford) and Andreas Skov Olsen (permanent basis from Club Brugge). In terms of departures, Ridle Baku joined RB Leipzig, Cédric Zesiger was loaned out to Augsburg and on-loan Salih Özcan was recalled by parent club BVB.
camera-photo

Leverkusen's acquisitions

Xabi Alonso made a couple of really strong signings over the transfer window, demonstrating his unwavering desire to defend his title. Spain international centre-back Mario Hermoso was brought in on loan from Roma, and Argentine midfield maestro Emiliano Buendía arrived from Aston Villa, likewise on a loan deal.

Another record?

Xabi Alonso has the opportunity to set another record against Wolfsburg. Only legendary manager Udo Lattek has gone 27 consecutive away games without defeat as a Bundesliga coach before, but the Spaniard has the opportunity to become the second with Die Werkself's trip to Wolfsburg.
