Full-time: Hoffenheim 0-4 Union Berlin

A miserable day at the office for the home side, who ship four goals, unanswered, against a direct relegation rival. Union Berlin were happy to let their hosts hog the ball, before countering ruthlessly when the chance arose. Two goals from the relentless Hollerbach and a dream debut from Ljbuicic, who scored and assisted, helped Union to a rare away win that could prove crucial as the season goes on.

Hložek well wide

The home side win the ball in the Union half after a period on the back foot. They work it to Hložek, who takes a pot shot from distance that bends away from goal even as it leaves his foot. The home side will need to do a lot better than this if they're to pull off a miracle here.

Union fans are having a party

The noise from the away end has been deafening all game but it's gone up a notch in this second period, as Union have scored twice and looked like the only side in this match throughout.

Union are running away with it!

Tousart collects a throw-in on the right, turns his marker and carries the ball into the Hoffenheim box. After reaching the byline, he slides a it across a crowded area and Ilić gets ahead of his man to poke it high into the net. One half-time introduction feeds another to surely put the game to bed for the visitors.

Kramarić nods wide

Bischof scurries away from his marker and feeds a nice pass wide to the right flank. Chaves latches onto it and whips a cross in first time. Kramarić meets it with space inside the area, but he can only steer his header wide of the left post. The Hoffenheim bench grimaces in unison.

Ljubicic doubles the lead!

He's only been on the pitch a couple of minutes but the winter signing has extended Union's advantage! Hoffenheim are caught cold at the back and Ljubicic is completely unmarked in the box to tuck away from close range.

Chance for Hollerbach!

Half-time: Hoffenheim 0-1 Union Berlin

It's been a rough watch for Hoffenheim fans, who have seen their side dominate possession, only to trudge down the tunnel a goal down. Union have been spiky, tough to break down and powerful on the counter. Hollerbach's 24th-minute strike, the result of a smart move he started and finished, the difference so far.
45'

Kramarić so close!

Hoffenheim launch their own counter. It's a three against three situation and the ball is eventually slipped into the path of a central Kramarić, who races into the Union box and tries to hit it over Rønnow. But the goalkeeper stays on his feet and denies the Croatian smartly.

Hollerbach just wide!

The winger races down the left flank and cuts inside his marker. He unleashes a shot but it's blocked straight back to him. He tries again but it slides narrowly wide of the left post. Philipp, well-beaten, watches it gratefully.

Hoffenheim dominating

The home side are knocking the ball left to right and back again, in search for an opening. But Union are camped deep and looking comfortable.

Union happy sitting deep

You always had the feeling the visitors would be happy to camp inside their own half if they took the lead and that is exactly what appears to be happening. The pressure is on Hoffenheim to score now.

Union take the lead!

Hollerbach starts and finishes his own move. The forward collects the ball centrally, inside the Hoffenheim half, and feeds it wide to a galloping Skov. The Dane slips a dangerous ball across the box, where Skarke pounces. The latter's volleyed effort is parried away but only as far as Hollerbach, who finishes coolly. It's his fifth goal of the Bundesliga campaign, reinforcing his status as Union's likeliest source of goals.

Hoffenheim chance!

Geiger collects the ball on the inside right channel and slips an inviting pass in-behind the Union defence. Younsgter Moerstedt races onto it and shoots from a tight angle inside the area, but the looming presence of Doekhi gets back in time to block behind for a corner.

Penalty shout!

Khedira cushions down a high ball inside the Hoffenheim box and turns to shoot. His effort appears to have been blocked, at point-blank range, by a defender's arm – but it's down by his side and there was nothing he could do to move out of the way. No chance, says the referee.

Great defending from Geiger

Hollerbach beats his man down the left flank and cuts a wicked ball right across a crowded Hoffenheim area. It's begging to be smashed home but Geiger races back to volley a bouncing cross straight over his own crossbar. It wasn't pretty, by any word, but great defending.

All going to script so far...

As expected, Hoffenheim are dominating the ball in the early stages, with Bischof dictating play from deep. Union are looking to break with pace through Hollerbach on the left flank whenever they win it back.

Great ball from Hollerbach

Allergic to goals?

While defence has been pretty solid this season, Union Berlin have scored the fewest goals in the whole division, finding the net just 16 times in 20 games so far. Can newly-signed forward Ljbuicic (who starts on the bench today) help grease the wheels?

Tale of two defences

While both of these sides are languishing at the lower end of the Bundesliga, Union boast a far superior defence. The Irons have conceded just 27 goals so far this season (as few as second-placed Leverkusen), while Hoffenheim have shipped 40. Only the bottom three have picked the ball out of their own nets more often than the home side.

An unsettled side?

Østigård is the 33rd different player to feature for Hoffenheim this season, which is by far the most of any team in the Bundesliga and the most ever by TSG in a Bundesliga campaign, matching the 33 they used in the whole of 2012/13.

Union team news

It's just one change for the visitors from the side that held Leipzig last week as Wooyeong Jeong replaces László Bénes, who's ill.

Hoffenheim team news

The hosts made three changes from the team that lost 3-1 in Leverkusen last week. Leo Østigård is handed his debut, while Andrej Kramarić and Max Moerstedt come in up front. Robin Hranáč, Finn Becker and Erencan Yardımcı drop to the bench.

Steffen Baumgart on facing Hoffenheim

“In Hoffenheim we are facing one of the better teams in terms of pure football. They have a lot of options in the final third; they’re are a team that is strong, not only in many offensive positions, but they can also be a real danger in front of goal, regardless of their position in the table.”
camera-photo

Christian Ilzer on facing Union

"You know with Steffen Baumgart that you're going to get an energetic opponent. You can already tell very clearly what style of play to expect. There are ways in which you can catch an opponent out. It's important to be confident and have good togetherness on the pitch. We have to bring our game to the forefront in the best possible way."

Home isn't where the heart is

Hoffenheim have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 30 Bundesliga home games and are now threatening to set a historically negative Bundesliga record: only Stuttgart (from April 2021 to February 2023) have managed to concede at least once in 31 consecutive Bundesliga home games.
camera-photo

Union's business

The Irons had one of the quieter windows of the Bundesliga clubs, but still made a couple of noteworthy deals. Croatian striker Marin Ljubičić was signed from Austrian side LASK, whilst Jordan departed to to join French side Reims and Yorbe Vertessen made the switch to RB Salzburg after less than a year at the Berlin club.
camera-photo

Hoffenheim's transfers

TSG were active in the winter transfer window to try and bolster their squad. Gift Orban was acquired from French side Lyon to help boost their attacking options, and he has so far seen some success, scoring twice in his last two games. With regards to outgoings, three notable players have left the Sinsheim club. Mërgim Berisha has gone out on loan to Augsburg, whilst Jacob Bruun Larsen has joined Stuttgart on a permanent deal. Starlet Tom Bischof has also signed for Bayern, but will remain with Hoffenheim until the end of the season.

Allergic to relegation

Whilst Hoffenheim (15th) and Union (14th) hover seven and four points respectively above the bottom three places, neither side has ever been relegated from the Bundesliga since its inception. Hoffenheim are in their 17th consecutive Bundesliga season and Berlin, their sixth.
