Freiburg home free

That might well be that. Great work by Doan, who hustles his way through and feeds Gregoritsch. The Austrian pokes through for Höler, whose low shot is saveable, but somehow squeezes through Schwolow. The keeper hasn't covered himself in glory there.

Almost time!

Coin flip time. A super atmosphere on a warm day in the Black Forest. Freiburg want top four, Schalke are keen for points to stave off relegation. Here we go ...

Teams in tunnel

Both sets of players are shaking hands inside the tunnel. The fans outside wait expectantly.

Warm-ups complete

Both sets of teams are coming to the end of their pre-match warm-ups. It's almost time for those all important words from Streich and Reis inside the dressing rooms. A huge three points up for grabs today, but who will be leaving the Europa-Park Stadion with them? We're soon to find out.

Freiburg's solid Schalke past

Freiburg go into this one having won their last four games against Schalke without conceding a single goal. Christian Streich's side are also unbeaten in their last seven against the Royal Blues.

All-rounder Matriciani

Such have been the extend of Schalke's injury woes, that Henning Matriciani is being deployed in a third different position for the third game in a row. On Matchday 27 at Hoffenheim, the 23-year-old played as a central defender while last week against Hertha, he started at left-back. The Lippstadt native plays at right back today.

Van den Berg back

Defender Sepp van den Berg is finally back in Schalke's injury-ravaged squad, the 21-year-old Liverpool FC loanee taking his place on the away bench after six months on the sidelines with a foot injury.

Streich: "It will be a very hard-fought game"

Freiburg coach Christian Streich expected as much from his opponents and knows today will be a tough fixture against a team fighting for their Bundesliga lives. “Schalke are now giving everything in the relegation battle,” said Streich. “I have no concerns whatsoever that anyone thinks it will be easy on Sunday. It will be a very hard-fought game.”

Contrasting ambitions

Freiburg need the points to keep their hopes of breaking back into the top four alive, while Schalke are fighting for their top-flight lives. Freiburg can't fall lower than their current standing of fifth, but could climb as high as third if Leipzig and Union slip up. Schalke, 17th after Matchday 28, could end the weekend anywhere between bottom of the table and 15th.
