NIEDERLECHNER!

Freiburg want at least a goal out of this but Florian Müller does not wish to give up his clean sheet, getting down well to deny a powerul Florian Niederlechner effort to his right.
88'

LEAPFROGGING

It's a big result for the table as well, seeing Mainz leapfrog their opponents into 12th place. Freiburg, however, are still 12 points clear of Stuttgart and the relegation play-off with six games remaining.
86'

TIME FOR ONE MORE?

This result currently equals Mainz's biggest Bundesliga win, which they last achieved back in January 2015 against Paderborn.
84'

LATE CHANGES

Robin Koch is back for his first game in almost two months after injury, being handed a few minutes at the end of this game. Interestingly, Alexandru Maxim has also come on for Mainz despite already being on a yellow card he received while warming up.

A LONG TIME COMING

Not only is it Mateta's first Bundesliga hat-trick, and just the second of his senior career, it's the first by a Mainz player in over two years when Danny Latza struck three times in a 3-1 win over Hamburg in December 2016.

MATETA FOR THE HAT-TRICK!

Mainz continue to run salt in the Freiburg wounds as Onisiwo gets down the right before crossing perfectly for Mateta to head home inside the six-yard box for his first Bundesliga hat-trick.

ALL OVER?

You suspect it just might be for Freiburg as Mainz strike for a fourth time from their eighth effort on goal. Boetius with another assist to slip in substitute Karim Onisiwo on the left, who shifts onto his right foot and curls beyond Schwolow. He also scored from the bench in the reverse fixture and now has three Bundesliga goals against Freiburg, which is more than against any other team.

JUST NOT SITTING FOR FREIBURG

You get the feeling this might not be Freiburg's night. One misplaced clearance by them in the first half led to three goals in 13 minutes, but when Mainz miscue a clearance, the visitors fail to capitalise.
64'

A RARITY

Not something you see every day but Alexandru Maxim has been cautioned by referee Sven Jablonski without even being on the pitch. The substitute was warming up behind the Mainz goal at the time and appeared to be stepping onto the pitch repeatedly.
64'

WALDSCHMIDT!

The substitute has made a real difference since coming on and forces a very good save out of Müller after dancing his way into space on the edge of the box.
62'

NOT GIVING UP

Freiburg continue to push and lead the shot count 4-1 since the break.
58'

WALDSCHMIDT NIPS IN

Freiburg continue to push and almost snatch a goal back as Luca Waldschmidt runs onto a deflected cross and beats Müller to the ball, but the striker can't direct his header on target.
51'

STENZEL!

Like in the first half, it's right-back Stenzel with the chance for Freiburg. He's completely unmarked at the far post as he gets his head onto substitute Waldschmidt's cross, but puts it straight at the legs of goalkeeper Müller. Big chance for Freiburg to get back into this.
46'

DOUBLE CHANGE

Christian Streich has reacted to that first-half display by ringing the changes. Striker Luca Waldschmidt and Florian Niederlechner are both on as Freiburg go for broke. Lucas Höler and Mike Frantz, who was acting as the third centre-back today, make way.

WHAT A HALF FROM MAINZ

They were very slow out of the blocks but haven't looked back since being handed their opening goal by Schwolow’s mistake. Coming into the game they had the worst chance conversion rate in the league but have scored their three goals from just five shots. Freiburg have never before scored more than two goals in their 19 Bundesliga matches against Mainz, so this second half will need a record-breaking performance if they're to stand a chance.
36'

MATETA THE MACHINE

The Frenchman's first Bundesliga brace now takes him onto nine goals for the season. It's already one more than Mainz's top scorer last season, Yoshinori Muto, managed in the entire 2017/18 campaign.
34'

CLINICAL FROM MAINZ

That's three goals in the space of 13 minutes to put themselves in cruise control. Left-back Aaron Martin reaches the byline before cutting the ball back to Mateta, who is completely in space six yards out and smashes the ball into the roof of the Freiburg net.

SHOT OR CROSS?

Freiburg have a free-kick from a narrow angle out on the left. Set-piece specialist Vincenzo Grifo is the man to take and seems to get caught between shooting and crossing, in the end doing nothing.
26'

NO MISTAKE THIS TIME

It's all gone horribly wrong for Freiburg as they're caught on the break. They lose the ball on the edge of the Mainz box but the hosts are too quick as Boetius breaks forward, feeds Mateta up to his left, who rounds Schwolow and slots the ball home for his eighth of the season.

MATETA!

Mainz almost strike again as Jean-Philippe Mateta runs at Frantz from the left wing, jinks to his left and looks to toe the ball past Schwolow from a tight angle but it only ends up in the side-netting.

A BITTER PILL TO SCHWOLOW

Mainz have been gifted the lead with their first effort on goal all evening. Freiburg goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow completely miscues a clearance and the ball goes straight to the feet of Jean-Paul Boetius around 30 yards out. All the Mainz man has to do it curl the ball into the empty Freiburg net for his second goal of the season.

FREIBURG'S BACK THREE

Stenzel's efforts from right-back are perhaps because Christian Streich has deployed him in more of a wing-back role today, wide of a three-man defence with captain Mike Frantz playing between usual centre-backs Dominique Heintz and Keven Schlotterbeck.

SAVE!

Right-back Stenzel looks a man on a mission tonight. The Mainz defence stand off the 23-year-old and he lets rip from the edge of the box, forcing a good save out of goalkeeper Florian Müller high to his right.

FREIBURG ON THE FRONT FOOT

It's the visitors who come out of the blocks quickest with left-back Christian Günter finding his opposite full-back Pascal Stenzel on the edge of the box, but the defender's low drive flies wide.

THREE CHANGES FOR MAINZ

Mainz boss Sandro Schwarz has drafted in three new faces to his side, with Guilio Donati and Niko Bungert coming into the back four in place of Daniel Brosinksi and Stephan Bell. Jean-Philippe Gbamin returns to the first XI in place of Levin Öztunali.

FREIBURG UNCHANGED

Sticking to the age-old adage of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", visiting coach Christian Streich has kept the same starting line-up that drew 1-1 at home to Bayern Munich last week. Lucas Höler, who found the net after just three minutes last time out, keeps his place up front ahead of Florian Niederlechner and Luca Waldschmidt, who are both on the bench.

MAINZ STARTING XI:

Müller – Donati, Bungert, Niakhate, Martin – Gbamin, Kunde, Latza – Boetius – Quaison, Mateta.  SUBS:  Zentner, Brosinski, Hack, Baku, Maxim, Ujah, Onisiwo

FREIBURG STARTING XI:

Schwolow – Stenzel, Schlotterbeck, Heintz, Günter – Frantz (c), Abrashi, Höfler, Grifo – Haberer – Höler.  SUBS:  Frommann, Koch, Okoroji, Gondorf, Terrazzino, Niederlechner, Waldschmidt

ONE TO WATCH: LUCA WALDSCHMIDT

The injury-enforced absence of top scorer Nils Petersen for Freiburg means youngster Luca Waldschmidt is set to make his 15 th Bundesliga start of the season. The 22-year-old have seven league goals to his name this term – just one behind Petersen – and has been used as a substitute in four of the side's last five games. Without a goal since the 5-1 thrashing of Augsburg on Matchday 23, this game could give the Germany youth international the opportunity to stake his claim for a regular berth in the first XI.

ADVANTAGE MAINZ?

Mainz may be off colour right now but they've had Freiburg's number in recent meetings, winning six of the last 10 Bundesliga clashes between the two. Freiburg have won just twice, while there have been two draws.

UNHAPPY TRAVELLERS

Mainz's poor form of late will come as music to Freiburg's ears, especially as they have not enjoyed the best time of things away from home this season (W2 D5 L6). Christian Streich's men are unbeaten in their last three outings - having taken an impressive point at home to Bayern last week - but have not won on their travels since the turn of the year, drawing three and losing two.

FORM

Mainz come into this game on the back of a four-game losing run following defeats to Hertha Berlin, Gladbach, Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen, a period in which they've conceded 12 goals and scored just two. And while their home form has been respectable this season (W5 D4 L4), they have won two and lost two in front of their own fans in 2019.

PREVIOUS MEETING: FREIBURG 1-3 MAINZ

Mainz pulled off a shock result when these teams met earlier in this season, romping to a 3-1 win at the Schwarzwald Stadion. Goals from Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Jean-Philippe Mateta put the 05ers 2-0 up inside the opening 20 minutes, with Karim Onisiwo sealing the points in the second half, finding the net just three minutes after Freiburg's Rolland Sallai had pulled a goal back.

FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHT

Today's fixture might not be the most glamourous of ties, but it is nevertheless shaping up to be a cracker. Mainz and Freiburg are neighbours in the table (in 13th and 12th respectively) and although they have a solid buffer above the relegation zone, neither is mathematically safe just yet. Victory would take the hosts 13 points clear of the drop zone with 18 points left to play for, while Freiburg would go 15 clear of danger with a win. Psychologically, then, whoever emerges victorious today would receive a major boost.
