Hannover puts in a strong home performance and defeat the league leaders from Cologne, who could have taken a big step towards promotion today. Reduced to 10 in the second-half, the visitors lacked a cutting edge and Gindorf proves the match-winner to keep Hannover in the promotion hunt.

Cologne have a go

Despite being a man down, the visitors are now managing to shift the play more into the opposition half and repeatedly deliver balls into the box. Could there still be something in this for them?

Half-time: Hannover 0-0 Cologne

The better team in those first 45 minutes is Hannover, who had numerous attempts on goal and Cologne can thank their goalkeeper that they haven't conceded. Towards the end of the first half, the away side did grow in the game and had a great chance through Kainz. All to play for after the break.

Schwäbe takes a knock

The visiting goalkeeper was treated on the pitch for a few minutes with an apparent knee injury. However, it seems he can continue for now and we're back underway.

7'

Inventive

From the left, Kainz plays a short free-kick to Thielmann, who then deliberately crosses it towards Downs. However, he cannot win the aerial duel, so no danger arises.
4'

Hectic start

Both teams are still searching for their rhythm and composure on the ball in this opening phase. Currently, there's a lot of back and forth.
1'

The ball is rolling!

Hannover kick-off, playing in red. The league leaders from Cologne are in blue.
キックオフ

Slight delay

Referee Gansloweit has to keep both teams waiting a bit longer, as smoke from the away supporters' block is obstructing visibility.

Four changes for Hannover

Nielsen, Oudenne, Muroya and Wdowik are rotated out of the side compared to the defeat in Darmstadt last time out. Momuluh, Gindorf, Ezeh and Tomiak are the new additions.

Cologne unchanged

For the first time in the second half of the season, Köln's coach Gerhard Struber sends the same starting XI into action for two consecutive matches. This last happened in November, curiously also across the fixtures against Münster and Hannover.

Hannover starting XI

Zieler - Tomiak, Neumann, Halstenberg, Ezeh - Lee, Leopold, Kunze, Gindorf - Momuluh, Tresoldi

Cologne starting XI

Schwäbe - Thielmann, Hübers, Heintz, Paqarada - Ljubicic, Martel, Kainz - Waldschmidt - Lemperle, Downs

Farewell to Breitenreiter

Hannover and head coach André Breitenreiter have mutually agreed to end their cooperation with immediate effect. The previous assistant coach Lars Barlemann, U19 coach Dirk Lottner and U17 coach Christian Schulz will take responsibility for the team in the four remaining matches of the season.

What Dirk Lottner has said

"This is certainly a special situation. I'm really looking forward to the match against Cologne and hope that we will perform really well as a team. The focus is now of course on the task surrounding the squad. The anticipation for the match is enormous."

What Gerhard Struber has said

"We continue to focus on ourselves. We proved a lot last week and we want to build on that. Hannover has a new coaching team that is now setting the pace."

Cologne lad

Ron-Robert Zieler is a native of Cologne and was at Effzeh from 1999 to 2005 and in 2020/21. However, his only competitive match for the first team was the last of his 254 Bundesliga appearances on 6 November 2020 in a 1-1 draw at Bremen.

Unforgettable

The last Bundesliga 2 meeting between the sides in Hannover took place on 8 May 2000. Cologne were 2-0 down after seven minutes, but roared back to win 5-3, securing promotion to the Bundesliga with four games to spare.

Long wait for a win

Hannover haven't won in Cologne for 10 years or beaten the Billy Goats on home soil in 11.

Draw streak

The last three competitive matches between Hannover and Cologne have all ended in draws. In this season's reverse fixture, Effzeh turned around a deficit with a man advantage (after Max Christiansen was sent off in the 55th minute), but an 86th-minute own goal from Florian Kainz earned Hannover a draw. Curiously, Hannover managed to equalise without a single shot on goal after the break.
