Full-time: Schalke 2-1 Karlsruhe
Schalke proved clinical in the first half, converting two goals from three shots on target, while Karlsruhe also made use of their first shot on goal, with Burnić providing a short-lived equaliser in the 25th minute. The second half was less eventful, with Schalke seeing out the victory to climb out of the bottom third of the table to take up a position directly behind Karlsruhe in the standings. For the visitors, it seems that ambitions of figuring in the promotion race have evaporated for now.

Counter-attack opportunity
Wanitzek threads a pass through to Herold, whose cross from the left finds Ben Farhat. His shot is blocked. Schalke are defending doggedly here. Karlsruhe's final corner comes to nothing.

Poorly executed
Another counter-attack opportunity for Schalke, but this time Hamache plays the ball straight to the feet of a Karlsruhe player.

Schalke loom again
Seguin advances down the left and lifts the ball over Weiß from the byline. Günther clears it at the far post in front of the incoming Bulut for a corner, which proves harmless. This was also Seguin's last action, as Grüger comes on for him for the final minutes.
82'
No danger
Herold tries a shot from distance, but the ball flies straight into Heekeren's arms.
79'
Wasted counter-attack opportunity
Schalke get a three-on-two situation, but both Conté and Hamache squander possession against the retreating Karlsruhe players.
78'
First Yellow
And that in the 78th minute. It's justified though, as Burnić takes down Bulut with a sliding tackle as he was trying to turn in the centre circle.

Satisfied Schalke?
Murkin takes his time with a throw-in. Are the hosts content with the narrow lead? Karlsruhe are currently showing little resistance.

Schalke beware
Karlsruhe lead the way in Bundesliga 2 for clinching points after falling behind this season, having done so on eight occasions (four wins, four draws).
69'
Triple substitution
Van Wonderen changes almost the entire attacking line, including goalscorer Ba. Will this bring new momentum to the game?
68'
Blocked!
Schalke's defender Bulut ventures far forward, receives the ball and takes a shot in the penalty area. Herold blocks it strongly with an outstretched leg - Weiß might not have been able to reach it had the left-back not intervened.
67'
Fair play
The match is currently being interrupted more frequently. Schalke's Murkin makes contact with Pinto Pedrosa's face, and Braun blows the whistle. Overall, the match is being played very fairly, with no bookings on either side so far.
64'
Lull in the action
Schalke started well after the break, and following Karlsruhe's offside goal, the visitors showed a bit more bite. Currently, much of the play is taking place in midfield, with neither team risking forward moves with the ball.

Perfect stat
Karlsruhe captain Marvin Wanitzek has managed to shake off his marker in ten out of ten instances.

First substitutions
In addition to Kaufmann, Jensen - the scorer of the temporary 1-1 equaliser - also leaves the pitch. Ben Farhat and Egloff are the new players in the game. Can they reinvigorate the Karlsruhe attack?
57'
Fizzles out
Schallenberg chips the ball over an opponent, Mohr tries to keep the ball in play on the touchline, but he doesn't manage to do so. The left-winger would have had space.
56'
A confidence booster?
The disallowed goal could give Karlsruhe confidence. Shortly after the incident, Wanitzek tried a shot from the left corner of the penalty area, but this time Heekeren was on hand to make the save.
52'
Karlsruhe strike ruled out for offside!
Rapp spots Schleusener making a run and plays a long ball to him. Schallenberg gets his head to it but it falls for the Karlsruhe man anyway. Schleusener cuts into the box from the left and Heekeren goes down early, allowing the striker to simply slot it home. Unfortunately - from the visitors' perspective - Schleusener was offside when the pass was made.
51'
Karlsruhe hemmed in
Karlsruhe now have possession, but they don't have much time to catch their breath because Schalke are pressing high and looking to disrupt early.
50'
Kamiński standing out
The Schalke player has provided his first direct assist of the season (for the 2-1 goal), had the most touches of any player (73 times) and won an impressive 80 percent of his duels.
49'
Schalke piling on the pressure
The home side are off to a great start in the second half. Karaman shields the ball well and shoots from a half-left position, but Weiß raises his right arm and deflects the ball for a corner.
46'
Counter-attack chance!
Kobald's long ball forward comes straight back like a boomerang. Ba gets on the ball, turns and fires in the penalty area but his shot is blocked into touch by man who started it all - Kobald.
46'
We're back under way!
Both teams are back on the pitch without any personnel changes. Karlsruhe kick off the second half.

Half-time: Schalke 2-1 Karlsruhe
Schalke got off to a better start and took an early lead through Bachmann. Karlsruhe then came into the game better and equalised after a mistake in the home team's build-up play, but the hosts promptly struck back from a corner. Afterwards, Schalke largely controlled the game, while Karlsruhe continued to make efforts despite rarely breaking through offensively.

No way through
Once again, Karlsruhe look to bounce back after falling behind. The visitors are now occasionally making brief forays forward, but they haven't posed a significant threat so far.
36'
Goal debut for Ba
The winter signing has scored his first second-division goal in his third match. Before the winter break, the Senegalese striker had netted ten league goals for French second-tier side Grenoble Foot 38.
34'
Schalke back in the lead!
And the resulting corner is successful! It sails dangerously into the six-yard box where, after a bit of pinball, Kamiński lays it off semi-deliberately to Ba, who finds a gap between the forest of legs and fires home!
33'
Karaman!
Spurred on by the fans, Schalke establish themselves more firmly in Karlsruhe's half. After good combination play, Karaman gets a fairly free shot from the right-hand side of the box, but Weiß stretches to make a save and concedes a corner.

Record for Jensen
It was the midfielder's fourth goal of the season - equalling his personal season record, set in 2022/23.
25'
The equaliser!
Murkin loses the ball cheaply on the left touchline and Karlsruhe immediately hit on the counter. Switching play to the left, Herold overlaps Wanitzek at the corner of the penalty area and receives the ball from him. His low cross is deflected by a Schalke player, but that doesn't stop Jensen from smashing the ball into the near corner - Heekeren is powerless!
23'
Off target
Seguin maintains possession by dribbling past Schleusener and Rapp in midfield and takes a shot from over 20 metres out, but his right-footed effort sails well over the Karlsruhe crossbar.
21'
Solid defensive lines
Now it's the home side keeping possession a bit longer in their own half, but they too are unable to find a gap as Karlsruhe are defending robustly.

Pass out of bounds
Looking to turn the page on this early goal, Karlsruhe shift the play well to their right flank, but Schleusener's pass to the front goes into empty space. And out for a goal-kick.
6'
Lightning start for Schalke!
Mohr's cross from the left touchline whizzes low through the six-yard box. Aydin misses it, and it slips through. Bachmann, who has made a run into the space behind, has plenty of time and even more room to calmly slot the ball into the middle of the goal.
5'
Heekeren called into action
Wanitzek sends a long ball from the left into the centre, but the ball is in the air for so long that Heekeren comfortably collects it.
3'
Headed away
Schalke break through on the right for the first time, with the ball cut back to Bachmann. He fires, but his shot is headed out of the danger zone by Kobald.
2'
First foul
During Schalke's build-up play, Karlsruhe's Burnić barges into Murkin and referee Braun awards the foul.

Kick-off!
The ball is rolling in Gelsenkirchen. Schalke, decked out in their customary blue, kick of against visitors Karlsruhe, kitted out in black.

New Karlsruhe appearance record
Marvin Wanitzek is playing his 187th match in Bundesliga 2 today - all of which have been played for Karlsruhe. He thus overtakes Emanuel Günther and becomes the sole appearance record holder for the Baden club in Germany's second-highest division.
A small milestone on each side
Burnić is playing his 50th second division match for Karlsruhe today, having moved to the Baden club from Heidenheim in the summer of 2023. For Schalke, Karaman is also making his 50th Bundesliga 2 appearance today, boasting a record of a goal almost every other game (24 goals).
Two unusual KSC starters
Kobald and Pinto Pedrosa are each in the Karlsruhe starting line-up for only the second time this season in the second division.
Four changes for the visitors
Karlsruhe coach Christian Eichner makes four changes to his starting lineup after the 2-0 home defeat against Braunschweig: Franke, Kobald, Pinto Pedrosa and Rapp play instead of Beifus, Bormuth, Heußer (all on the bench) and Jung (not in the squad).
Two changes for Schalke
Kees van Wonderen makes two changes to his starting lineup after the 1-0 defeat in Cologne: Bulut and Seguin play in place of Kalas and Grüger, who are both on the bench.
Karlsruhe's starting XI
Weiß - Pinto Pedrosa, Kobald, Franke, Herold - Rapp, Jensen - Burnić, Wanitzek - Schleusener, Kaufmann
Schalke's starting XI
Heekeren - Bulut, Schallenberg, Kamiński, Murkin - Bachmann, Seguin - Aydin, Karaman, Mohr - Ba
Christian Eichner's thoughts on Schalke
"There is still great anticipation among us for headlines clashes like this ones. It's a new opportunity to put points on the board in the second half of the season, against a team that will try to control the game."
Kees van Wonderen's thoughts on Karlsruhe
"Karlsruhe have conceded some late goals, but the matches were very tight. Before the winter break, they were in second place. There are no easy games, including Sunday's. We are prepared and absolutely want to win at home."
It's been a while
In fact, Schalke's last competitive victory against Karlsruhe was a 2-0 away win in the DFB Cup in 2011, while their last home success came in April 2009 in the Bundesliga by the same scoreline, with Manuel Neuer still between the sticks.
Bogey team
Schalke, meanwhile, have played against no other team so often in Bundesliga 2 without winning once. In the last three encounters with Karlsruhe, Schalke were unable to manage even a goal (the last one was scored by Simon Terodde on 26 February 2022 in a 1-1 draw at the BBBank Wildpark).
Good record in Bundesliga 2
The two teams have met seven times in the second tier so far, with Karlsruhe avoiding defeat in all of those encounters (four wins, three draws).
