Full-time: Magdeburg 3-0 Cologne
The long-dominant visitors from Cologne failed to score, and a set-piece helped Magdeburg get back on track at the right time. Heber awakened belief in the first home victory with his header, which Magdeburg can now actually celebrate on their eleventh attempt.

Loric seals the deal
The super-sub strikes and removes any lingering doubts about Magdeburg's three points. Hübers' header lands perfectly at the Frenchman's feet, who volleys it into the bottom right corner. 3-0!

El Hankouri doubles Magdeburg's advantage!
Within six minutes, the hosts have turned a 0-0 into 2-0! Kaars lays it off for the recently substituted Loric on the left side of the penalty area. He plays it back to the right, where El Hankouri blasts the ball towards the centre of the goal. Schwäbe dives in but only manages to save it behind the line. Magdeburg are on course for their first home victory!

Loves a header
It was Heber's first goal of the season and his third goal overall in his 71st second division match. All of them have been scored with his head.

Against the run of play
After several strong phases from Cologne and one from Magdeburg, a goal didn't seem likely in the last few minutes. Will a set piece decide this match?

Heber heads it in!
Atik curls the resulting free-kick from the right to the edge of the six-yard box, where Heber majestically outjumps Downs and powerfully heads it in to give Magdeburg the lead.

A question of stamina?

Half-time: Magdeburg 0-0 Cologne
Cologne have been the better team and Magdeburg are fortunate to go into the break level at 0-0. Apart from Ahl-Holmström's offside goal, the hosts have shown far too little cohesion for Magdeburg fans to have got their hopes up for their first home win of the season.

Burcu denied for offside!
After Magdeburg's first good attack, the ball ends up in the Cologne net! Burcu powers down the right and into the centre, poking the ball towards the far post, where Ahl-Holmström taps it in. But the flag goes up - Burcu was offside when receiving the penultimate pass.

Out onto the pitch
The teams are entering the field here in Magdeburg.
Titz's century
Christian Titz is on the sidelines for his 100th match in the Bundesliga 2. The day before yesterday also marked his four-year service anniversary in Magdeburg, having taken over on 12 February 2021 when they were second from bottom in the third division.
Squad debut
Top scorer Tim Lemperle is still absent, but a new face appears on the Cologne bench today: Meiko Sponsel, a 22-year-old right-back, is included in the first-team squad for the first time.
Thielmann starts
Along with Hübers, Florian Kainz and Jan Thielmann are also new to the Billygoats' team, replacing the Bosnian duo Denis Huseinbasic and Josip Gazibegovic on the bench. Thielmann had recently lost his regular spot on the right to winter signing Gazibegovic, and had only started in the cup match against Leverkusen in 2025.
More on that Cologne side
For the visitors from Cologne, captain Timo Hübers returns after a yellow card suspension, while Eric Martel is out due to injury.
More on that Magdeburg side
Magdeburg can once again rely on Mo El Hankouri, who was sorely missed last week (replacing Falko Michel). There's a second change too with Alexander Ahl-Holmström making his first start, coming into the team for Philipp Hercher. Nominally, this makes the hosts even more offensive, and it remains to be seen how this will actually play out on the pitch.
Cologne starting XI
Schwäbe - Schmied, Hübers, Heintz - Thielmann, Olesen, Paqarada - Ljubicic, Kainz - Downs, Maina
Magdeburg starting XI
Reimann - Hugonet, Mathisen, Heber - Gnaka - El Hankouri, Nollenberger - Kaars - Burcu, Atik - Ahl-Holmström
Gerhard Struber on facing Magdeburg
"Magdeburg are a really strong opponent. Even despite their difficulties at home, they rank highly in terms of xG value and possession. Up front, they have players who can make the difference."
Magdeburg boss Christian Titz's thoughts
"We're looking forward to the home match against Cologne in front of our fantastic crowd. We're facing the team that has been the most consistent in collecting points so far and has recently won many close matches. They defend solidly and then transition into their extremely fast counter-attacking play – that's a great quality. It will be a difficult task and a highly interesting match for the spectators."
The reverse fixture
When these two met earlier this campaign, the Magdeburg turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Falko Michel (his only career goal at this level) and Jean Hugonet.
Strong against Cologne
Magdeburg have a positive record against Cologne, managing two wins and one draw in four competitive matches. They have lost only once to Effzeh (3-0 away in December 2018 in this division).
