Full-time: Borussia Dortmund 0-2 VfB Stuttgart

Despite some promising signs, Dortmund tasted defeat in new coach Niko Kovač's first match in charge thanks to an unlucky own-goal from Anton and Chabot's first-ever Bundesliga goal. Brandt pulled one back for the hosts and BVB pushed hard for a last-gasp leveller as the tensions mounted in this hard-fought match, but Stuttgart held firm and climbed to fourth with a deserved win.

More on those teams

New BVB coach Niko Kovač makes only one change to the starting line-up from the last game (a 2-1 Bundesliga win in Heidenheim) as Karim Adeyemi starts in place of Julien Duranville (on the bench) in Kovač's preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. Meanwhile VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß makes two changes to his starting XI compared to the last game (1-0 home win in the DFB Cup quarter-final against Augsburg). Jamie Leweling and Enzo Millot (fit after a cup injury scare) replace Jacob Bruun Larsen (ill) and Ermedin Demirović (bench).

Watch: Kovač takes charge of Dortmund

The former Bundesliga and DFB Cup winning coach at Bayern Munich has outlined what we wants to see at his new club.
camera-photo

Sebastian Hoeneß on facing Dortmund

"It's a normal process. When a new coach takes over and has his first game, preparation for the opponent is normally a bit more special. Even though it's a challenging task we face, our motivation for a good away game is big. We want to take the momentum of reaching the DFB Cup semi-finals with us."
camera-photo

Niko Kovač on facing Stuttgart

"It is certainly very important for the mentality, for the head, when you make it through to the next round. Stuttgart are a team that have developed really well since Sebastian [Hoeneß] has been there. The team play very aggressive football, defend high up the pitch and look to disrupt their opponents early."
camera-photo

Stuttgart's business

Comparatively, Stuttgart had something of a quieter window but still got some good deals over the line. Danish international Jacob Bruun Larsen arrived on a permanent basis from Hoffenheim to bolster the Swabians' attacking options, and incredibly promising young German central defender Finn Jeltsch was acquired from Nuremberg.
camera-photo

Dortmund transfers

BVB have been very active in the winter transfer window in hopes of getting their season back on track. Notable acquisitions include talented young English midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka on loan from Chelsea, versatile defender Daniel Svensson on loan from Nordsjaelland, and the recall of Salih Özcan who had been loaned out to Wolfsburg. With regards to departures, Donyell Malen has left on a permanent deal, joining English side Aston Villa.
