FC Bayern München midfielder Xabi Alonso is hoping to be fit in time for the DFB Cup final against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday after taking part in sections of full-team training on Wednesday for the first time since sustaining an injury.
The Spaniard suffered heavy bruising to his ribs away to FC Ingolstadt 04 on Matchday 33, and did not feature in the club's final Bundesliga game of the season, a 3-1 victory at home to Hannover 96.
"I'm not sure if I'll be okay by Saturday," the 34-year-old told FCB.tv. "I still need a bit of time to get better. But we've got another three days and I hope I can recover quickly."
Alonso played in 26 of Bayern's Bundesliga matches en route to a record fourth successive title, and was in the starting line-up for the last four rounds of the DFB Cup, memorably helping the Bavarians get past SV Darmstadt 98 in the last 16 with a stunning long-range effort in a 1-0 win.
