There was an understandable air of disappointment at the BayArena following Bayer 04 Leverkusen's exit from the UEFA Europa League in the wake of a 0-0 draw (2-0 loss on aggregate) in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie with Villarreal CF.
Roger Schmidt (Leverkusen coach): "Congratulations to Villarreal. They deserved to go through given their performances over both legs. We controlled the match, but lacked urgency. A goal would have given us a boost." J
Jonathan Tah (Leverkusen defender): "It just wasn't to be. We gave it our all and fought to score up until the final minute. We can say we did everything we could but unfortunately we just couldn't find the net. Now we're going to turn our full attention to the league. We need to throw ourselves into it and give everything we've got."
Karim Bellarabi (Leverkusen midfielder): "We didn't manage to create our chances up front. It was a difficult match for us. We need to put it behind us as quickly as possible."
Rudi Völler (Leverkusen sporting director): "If you don't score in two games then you don't deserve to go through. We want to play in Europe again next season."
