Borussia Dortmund swept into the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League after a 1-0 win away at FC Porto on Thursday night gave them a 3-0 victory on aggregate.

FC Porto 0-1 Borussia Dortmund (agg. 0-3)

Goal: 0-1 Casillas o.g. (23’)

Thomas Tuchel’s side were in a formidable position going into the game, and it only took them until midway through the first half to cement their position of dominance over their Portuguese hosts. Ilkay Gündogan’s raking diagonal pass found Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the box, and though Iker Casillas saved the Armenian’s volley, the goalkeeper ended up deflecting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s follow-up into his own net.

With progression all but secure and with an eye on the visit of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Sunday, Tuchel withdrew Gündogan and Mats Hummels at the break, replacing them with Nuri Sahin and Neven Subotic respectively. Subotic in particular was barely troubled by a Porto attack that look long resigned elimination, and it was left to the side second in the Bundesliga table to see out the result with minimum fuss.

The draw for last 16 will take play in Nyon on Friday, 26 February.

Man of the match

He had assisted a staggering 18 goals in all competitions going into this game, and once again Mkhitaryan was at the heart of all of BVB’s good work, creating the goal with an instinctive first-time hit and striking the post late on. Hoffenheim will have a job on their hands keeping him quiet on Matchday 23.
