SV Werder Bremen booked their place in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup with a thrilling 4-3 victory away at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-4 SV Werder Bremen
After dominating the opening exchanges and forcing Yann Sommer into a fantastic double-save, Bremen fell behind against the run of play when Lars Stindl slotted into the corner. Viktor Skripnik’s men stuck to their task, however, and Janek Sternberg’s arrowed effort levelled things up, before Jannik Vestergaard made it 2-1 from close range after Florian Grillitsch’s free-kick was parried into his path.
Parity in an open, entertaining game was restored when Foals substitute Branimir Hrgota found the far corner with a well-taken goal, but veteran Claudio Pizarro’s shot went through Sommer’s legs just a minute later, before Anthony Ujah sealed the win on the break when his deflected effort wrong-footed the keeper, rendering Hrgota’s late second academic.
