FC Schalke 04 secured top spot in UEFA Europa League Group K courtesy of a routine 4-0 win away to Asteras Tripolis.
Asteras Tripolis 0-4 FC Schalke 04
Already through to the Round of 32, Schalke got the breakthrough their dominance deserved through Franco Di Santo’s well-taken header. Asteras threatened sporadically on the counter, but the Greek side were left with a mountain to climb when Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting converted Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s cross to extend the Royal Blues’ lead.
Schalke barely gave Asteras a sniff of Ralf Fährmann’s goal after the restart, with almost all the action taking place at the opposing end of the pitch. Choupo-Moting doubled his tally thanks to a masterful shimmy and fine finish, before substitute Max Meyer capped another flowing team move and throughly professional night’s work with Die Knappen’s fourth of the night.
Man of the match
Aside from continuing his rich vein of form with his fourth goal in his last four games in all competitions, Choupo-Moting was a veritable handful for the Asteras defence throughout.
Unbeaten in this season’s competition (W4, D2), Schalke - boasting ample European experience - are going to be a match for whoever they are paired with in Monday’s draw for the last 32.
- Choupo-Moting has scored in his last two Europa League outings.
- Four of Di Santo’s five Europa League goals this term have come against Asteras.
