A much-changed Borussia Dortmund side lost in the UEFA Europa League for the first time this season after falling to a 1-0 defeat away to Russian side FC Krasnodar.

FC Krasnodar 1–0 Borussia Dortmund

Goals: 1-0 Mamaev (pen. 2’)

With Dortmund already guaranteed a place in the knockout rounds, coach Thomas Tuchel rotated his squad to give a number of stars, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marco Reus, a much-needed rest. Yet despite still boasting several first team regulars, BVB got off to a nightmare start when Pavel Mamaev scored from the penalty spot in the second minute after Mats Hummels brought down Mauricio Pereya.

Dortmund were the better team thereafter but invariably a poor final ball prevented them finishing off promising attacking moves. Adrian Ramos went closest to scoring for the visitors, hitting the bar and having a diving header saved off the line. Henrikh Mkhitaryan also struck the woodwork in the closing stages of the second half but it just was not to be for Dortmund, who failed to score for the first time this season.

Man of the match

There is a reason Ilkay Gündogan is one of the first names on the Dortmund teamsheet. The Germany international is consistently outstanding in central midfield and was excellent again here, shielding the BVB defence expertly (winning 50 per cent of his tackles) and also launching attacks with his vision and pinpoint passing (89 per cent pass completion).

Talking point

Having topped Group C throughout the campaign so far, this result leaves Dortmund in second place, level on points with Krasnodar. Tuchel’s charges need to win their final game against PAOK FC and hope Krasnodar slip up to be guaranteed top spot and, theoretically at least, a more favourable draw in the next round.

Match stats

  • Dortmund had 65 per cent of possession over the 90 minutes.
  • BVB fired 20 shots on goal, compared to Krasnodar’s nine.
  • Sven Bender saw more of the ball (131 touches) than any other player on the pitch.
