Dortmund - Borussia Dortmund sailed into the play-offs of the UEFA Europa League after a 5-0 win in the second leg of their third-round qualifier against Austrian Bundesliga outfit Wolfsberger AC completed a 6-0 aggregate victory.
After a frustrating first half, the floodgates opened after the restart with Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang putting the tie beyond the visitors before Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave the result an emphatic appearance with a stunning hat-trick.
Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel made two changes from the side that prevailed 1-0 in Klagenfurt a week ago, with Roman Weidenfeller replacing Roman Bürki in goal and Shinji Kagawa coming in for Jonas Hofmann. There was little doubt he would stick with Aubameyang up front, however, and the Gabonese international justified his coach’s wisdom with an enterprising display as the lone frontman.
Happy to allow the triumvirate of Reus, Kagawa and Mkhitaryan to work in triangles behind him, Aubameyang stayed on the shoulder of the last defender twice coming close to an opener after crosses from Marcel Schmelzer. BVB pinned their hosts back and after Reus was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty, Kagawa had a goal chalked off due to an offside flag against Aubameyang.
Reus makes breakthrough
Reus had been in the thick of the action in the opening half, forcing a smart save from Wolfsberg keeper Alexander Kofler, and he finally beat the keeper three minutes after the break with a cool finish into the corner. Just after the hour mark, the result was put to bed when Aubameyang darted onto Ilkay Gündogan’s pass and applied a deft finish to double the lead on the night.
Armenia international Mkhitaryan then helped himself to his first competitive goals of the season with three finely struck efforts to complete a highly satisfactory evening for Tuchel’s men, who will now await their opponents with relish when the play-off draw is made on Friday.
