An own goal from home defender Nektarios Alexandrou gave Armin Veh’s men the lead in the first half, before neat finishes from Srdjan Lakic and Sebastian Jung set the seal on a comfortable win which sees them retain top spot in Group F.
The hosts were dealt a blow in the warm-up when winger Stefan Aigner was ruled out with injury, but his replacement Lakic did a sterling job in his absence. The Croatian striker peeled away from a defender early on to fire in a goal-bound shot that was cleared off the line, before the adventurous Jung helped put the Eagles ahead when his cross was diverted into his own net by Alexandrou.
Tranquillo Barnetta in particular was having a lively game for the Eagles, and Sebastian Rode almost made it two with a header from one of Swiss international's free-kicks, before the latter then had a shot blocked after a promising counter-attack.
Lakic off the mark
The opening moments of the second period were rather scrappy, with fouls being committed by both sets of players, but one moment of quality from the visitors saw them deservedly extend their lead. Rode was fouled outside the box, but Lakic picked up possession and played a one-two with Vaclav Kadlec, before coolly slotting between the goalkeeper’s legs.
Jung then burst through to steer in a near-post effort to effectively settle the result and, though zhe hosts mounted a late rally with substitute Selim Benachour coming within inches of a consolation, Frankfurt were able to see out a comfortable victory to take a firm grip on Group F.
