The Royal Blues, who reached the last 16 of the competition in the previous campaign, qualified for the group stages courtesy of a play-off victory over PAOK FC.
Battle for second
"The situation is clear," said Schalke director Horst Heldt. "Chelsea are the clear favourites, the other teams will compete for second place. If we perform as we know we can in all six games, qualification for the last 16 is a real possibility."
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar added: "Every Champions League game is special and that is why we want to stay in the competition as long as possible." The Gelsenkirchen club, knocked out off the tournament after being beaten over two legs by Turkish outfit Galatasaray SK, will be hoping to go one better than last season.
