Nyon - FC Schalke 04 will face Ukrainian outfit FC Metalist Kharkiv in their attempt to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage.

The first leg will take place in Gelsenkirchen on the 20th/21st August, and the return fixture in the Ukraine will be on the 27th/28th August.

FC Schalke 04 will aim to join fellow Bundesliga sides FC Bayern Munich (reigning champions), Borussia Dortmund (last season’s runner-up) and Leverkusen in the group stages of Europe's premier club competition. The Royal Blues topped their group last season, which included Arsenal FC, Montpellier Herault FC, and Olympiacos FC before being knocked out by Galatasaray AS in the Round of 16, and will be hoping to improve upon that result this time out.

Metalist, who finished second in the Ukrainian Premier League last season, beat PAOK FC - coached by former Schalke manager Huub Stevens - 3-1 on aggregate to reach this stage of the competition. The Ukranian outfit topped their Europa League group last season, which included Bayer 04 Leverkusen, against whom they prevailed 2-0 in the Ukraine, and drew 0-0 in the BayArena.
