After a rather timid start, the Foals were ahead at the break through Mike Hanke, and although strikes from Joey Barton and Jordan Ayew put the hosts in front, Arango had the last laugh with a powerful half-volley.
Foals steal in front
Gladbach had won their first game in the competition against Marseille two weeks ago, but they had to weather a considerable storm before they took the lead against the run of play. The first warning side for Lucien Favre's men came when Marc-Andre ter Stegen misjudged a corner and Loic Remy’s header had to be cleared off the line by Oscar Wendt, playing in place of injured captain Filip Daems.
Marseille, utterly dominant in possession, then undid their good start by gifting Gladbach the lead. Captain Benoit Cheyrou was the guilty party, as he inexplicably conceded possession to Arango in his own box, after which the Venezuelan played a simple square pass for Hanke to tap home.
Hanke had spurned a great opportunity to double the lead before the half-time break, and Favre’s team were made to pay soon after the restart. English midfielder Joey Barton, whose set-piece deliveries had been dangerous all evening, swung in a wicked corner that floated over ter Stegen and nestled into the net.
By now the momentum was with the home side and they went in front shortly afterwards as Ayew left Alvaro Dominguez trailing in his wake to hammer an explosive shot past ter Stegen on 67 minutes. Under the cosh for much of the second half, the Foals were not to be denied, however, and Arango secured a point by rifling in from Lukas Rupp’s delivery, keeping the Foals in a great position to qualify for the knockout stages.
