Mario Gomez returned to haunt former club Wolfsburg with the veteran forward netting an equaliser to earn Stuttgart a much-needed point on the road after Divock Origi had given the hosts a first-half lead.

Wolfsburg 1-1 Stuttgart

Goals: 1-0 Origi (24'), 1-1 Gomez (60')

The visitors made a bright start under the guise of new coach Tayfun Korkut and went close to hitting the front when Wolfsburg old boy Gomez headed debutant Erik Thommy’s corner narrowly off target. The Wolves took plenty of heart from a 1-0 victory against Hannover on Matchday 20 and were eager to achieve consecutive Bundesliga wins for the first time this season here. To that end, Maxi Arnold went in search of an opener with a shot that flew inches wide, before Origi showed how it should be done. Picking up possession in midfield, the Liverpool loanee advanced before curling home his fifth Bundesliga goal of the campaign.

Having collected just one point on the road all season, Stuttgart needed inspiration to find a way back into this one. They found it in the form of Gomez, the striker who started the current campaign on the opposing team. With a Thommy corner again causing problems, Dennis Aogo managed to direct the set-piece into the path of the 32-year-old forward who bagged his first goal following a return to the club of his formative years. Jeffrey Bruma and Joshua Guilavogui were off target as the hosts looked to regain the lead as the half wore on, yet coach Korkut was not to be denied a solid start to life on the Stuttgart bench.

Match stats

Gomez's last Stuttgart game against Wolfsburg prior to this saw the striker score four times in a 4-1 win for the Swabians in 2009. Korkut is the ninth coach to take charge at Stuttgart in four and half years since Bruno Labbadia left in August 2013.
