Timo Werner, RB Leipzig

Striker is just one letter and a little change in word order from ‘shirker’, but Leipzig’s livewire firebrand cannot be accused of never putting in a shift for his team. Yes, the goals dried up in the Rückrunde, but at 22, the Germany international is still a ‘work in progress’, and when he is the finished article, he will be a masterpiece.

Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich

You can become blasé about continued brilliance, and we have certainly been spoiled by the Bayern forward. Even so, he just keeps on dropping jaws with his performances. With 28 goals, he looks highly likely to beat his career-best tally of 30 last season, and would you bet against him going beyond Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s record for a foreign-born player of 31? No, thought not.

Alfred Finnbogason, Augsburg

The Iceland international’s predatory instincts have been the centrepiece of Augsburg’s impressive season. With a goals tally into double figures, this is his best campaign in Germany yet. His impact can also be measured in just how much he was missed in the ten games he was sidelined by injury, and the seismic effect he had when he returned against Mainz on Matchday 31.
