Mats Hummels(Bayern Munich)

The Germany international remains one of the classiest centre-backs in the world game. Unflappable as ever, the ex-Borussia Dortmund man's ability to unerringly pick out a pass is just as valuable as his crystal-ball reading of the game, which enables him to snuff out danger before it can really threaten.

Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich)

The 'other half' of the Bayern-Germany centre-back pairing has again had spells on the treatment table this season, but when he has been on the pitch, he has been as imperious as ever. His ability to ally finesse with his natural-born athleticism means he is still one of the planet's finest exponents of the defensive arts.

Carlos Salcedo (Eintracht Frankfurt)

The Eagles' top-four hopes have taken a beating in recent weeks, and Salcedo's absence is no stranger to that dip in form. The Mexico international's collarbone fracture while on international duty with El Tri could not have come at a worse time for Niko Kovac's men, who had looked cement-solid with their summer signing from Fiorentina in the line-up.
