With set-piece specialist Hakan Calhanoglu having to settle for a place on the bench against SV Werder Bremen on Matchday 7, Julian Brandt assumed free-kick duties for Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the Weser-Stadion.
The German U21 international midfielder did not disappoint: His 58th-minute free-kick crashed in off the underside of the crossbar to give die Werkself a 2-0 lead in an eventual 3-0 victory. It was the first time the Bremen-born midfielder had scored directly from a set-piece.
