History was made in Germany over the weekend as popular television sports show Sportschau awarded its "Tor des Monats" prize to a blind player for the first time ever, with St. Pauli's Serdal Celebi taking the honours for August.

The left-footer scored in the 38th minute of the Blind Bundesliga final on 25 August against MTV Stuttgart, dribbling down the right side of the pitch before cutting inside and curling the ball through a crowded penalty area and into the top corner.

While it was not enough to prevent his side losing the final 2-1, the 34-year-old's strike won the vote ahead of Hertha Berlin's Marvin Plattenhardt and Freiburg's Mike Frantz.

"I'm delighted, it's something historic," said Celebi, a former Germany international at blind football, upon learning of his success. "Thank you to everyone who supported me and voted for me."

Previous winners this year include Toni Kroos' strike for Germany at the 2018 FIFA World Cup against Sweden (June), Jonas Hector's turn and shot for Cologne against Wolfsburg in May and Nils Petersen's long-range strike for Freiburg against Borussia Dortmund in January.
