Eintracht Frankfurt suffer narrow loss to Philadelphia Union

Eintracht Frankfurt were unable to end their summer US tour on a high note after slipping to a narrow 1-0 defeat against MLS side Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening.

Philadelphia Union 1-0 Eintracht Frankfurt

Goals: 1-0 Jones (49')

A roar went up among the home crowd when Timothy Chandler's name was read out in the Frankfurt starting line-up and the USA international was heavily involved in the early exchanges, powering forward from his position at right-back at regular intervals, even going close with an audacious volley from the edge of the box. Nicolai Müller and Jetro Willems also looked lively in the final third, but Adi Hütter's men lacked the necessary incision to break down a disciplined home side.

Half-time brought a raft of changes once again for the Eagles, with Hütter rotating his entire outfield line-up, with only goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald staying on the pitch. Perhaps that was why the Eagles were caught cold at the start of the second period when Derrick Jones latched onto a loose ball, strode past Simon Falette and buried a low shot into the bottom corner. To their credit, Frankfurt dominated thereafter and created plenty of opportunities to equalise only for a combination of wayward finishing and some fine saves from Philadelphia goalkeeper John McCarthy keeping them from scoring.

Frankfurt now return to Germany on Sunday as they gear up for the start of the 2018/19 Bundesliga season against Freiburg on 25 August.
