Although Royal Blues captain Benedikt Höwedes was withdrawn from the action with a suspected thigh injury after 20 minutes, goals from Franco Di Santo and Leroy Sane capped a dominant display of Bundesliga muscle in Orlando.

New faces impress

"It was a successful start to the new year," commented Schalke head coach Andre Breitenreiter after the game. "We won, kept a clean sheet and were clearly the better team. We also introduced our new signings Younes Belhanda and Alessandro Schöpf into the game well. We played some really attractive football and created lots of great chances to score."

Florida Cup debutants Schalke are next in action against Brazilian outfit Atletico Mineiro on Wednesday, 13 January. Die Knappen's first Bundesliga outing of the calendar year comes at home to SV Werder Bremen ten days later.
