Hannover 96 have further strengthened their squad by securing the services of Portugal striker Hugo Almeida.

Schaaf and Almeida reunited

The 57-time international is Hannover’s fifth winter signing, the struggling Reds having already snapped up Hotaru Yamaguchi, Adam Szalai, Iver Fossum and Marius Wolf.

“I didn’t waste much time accepting [Hannover’s] offer,” said Almeida, who worked under current 96ers coach Thomas Schaaf at SV Werder Bremen between 2006 and 2010. “I haven’t stopped following the Bundesliga and never gave up hope of returning one day. Hopefully I can do my bit to help Hannover avoid relegation.”

Schaaf seemed equally excited at the prospect of being reunited with his former player. “We were aware that we needed further strengthening in attack,“ he explained. “Hugo will be doing us a lot of good. He’s a powerful striker and has an eye for goal.”

Hannover host SV Darmstadt 98 in their first Rückrunde match on 23 January.
