- Estudiantes go ahead in first half.
- Schreck, 17, equalises for Bayer in second period.
- Dragovic nets winning penalty for the Bundesliga side.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen shook off the winter cobwebs in preparation for the second half of the Bundesliga season by beating 10-man Estudiantes de la Plata 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the first match at the Florida Cup 2017.
Die Werkself coach Roger Schmidt fielded a strong starting line-up against the Argentine side at the Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, including Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez, Kevin Kampl and Hakan Calhanoglu, but despite looking comfortable in the opening period they fell behind to Elias Umere's 33rd-minute strike.
Chicharito had the best chance to equalise shortly afterwards, but saw his penalty saved. Rodrigo Brana then received his marching orders moments before the interval.
Leverkusen continued to dominate in the second half and had chances to level the score through Kießling and Danny Da Costa, before 17-year-old Sam Schreck showed them how it was done with a close-range finish. Schmidt's charges pushed for a winner late on and Kießling again went close with a looping header, but ultimately there were no more goals in regular time. Leverkusen went on to win the ensuing penalty shootout 4-2.
