Football is fiercely competitive by nature, with the high stakes often creating a win-at-all-costs environment. Against that backdrop, it is always deeply heart-warming to see spontaneous gestures of sportsmanship in the game.
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Gonzalo Castro was our standout figure in this regard in 2016, with his act of fair play against VfL Wolfsburg on Matchday 32 of the 2015/16 campaign earning him a round of applause from both sets of fans.
BVB had raced to an early 2-0 lead at home to the Wolves when Marco Reus' back-heel released Castro just inside the Wolfsburg penalty area. Castro darted into the box to collect the pass, but, noticing that Wolfsburg defender Christian Träsch was lying on the ground in obvious pain, he opted to knock the ball out of play rather than take advantage of being well placed to shoot.
Castro played the full 90 minutes and was one of the stand-out players as Dortmund romped to a 5-1 victory. Simply click play on the video below to watch the midfielder's demonstration of true sportsmanship.
