VfL Wolfsburg have terminated the contract of striker Nicklas Bendtner with immediate effect.

Bendtner, whose deal at the Volkswagen Arena was due to run until 2017, joined Wolfsburg on a free transfer in summer 2014 after leaving Arsenal FC and scored nine goals in 47 appearances.

His most notable contribution was netting the equalising goal for the Wolves against FC Bayern München in the 2015 Supercup, before then converting the winning spot-kick in the subsequent penalty shootout.

Wolfsburg also lifted the DFB Cup last season and finished second in the league, but Dieter Hecking’s side have had a disappointing season so far. They currently languish tenth in the table following Matchday 31’s 2-0 home loss against FC Augsburg and are six points off qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.
