Mario Götze made his long-awaited comeback from illness as Borussia Dortmund beat Japanese side Urawa Reds 3-2 in a friendly on Saturday.

The 25-year-old came on in the 62nd minute as a replacement for Nuri Sahin, his first appearance since he was diagnosed with a “metabolic disturbance” back in February.

Watch: One small step for Dortmund; One giant leap for Götze!

Götze’s 2016/17 season was cruelly cut short by the disorder, which saw him withdrawn from training indefinitely, but he recently announced he was ready to re-join the squad and is set to play a full part in proceedings under new coach Peter Bosz this term.

After falling behind early on to their J-League hosts Urawa Reds on Saturday, Dortmund rallied in the second half, with another substitute Emre Mor inspiring them to victory by scoring twice and assisting Andre Schürrle for the winner.

BVB landed in Japan on Friday and will play a further friendly against AC Milan on 18 July in Guanghzhou, China before returning to Germany.
