Honours even as Mainz and Borussia Mönchengladbach play out scoreless draw

Borussia Mönchengladbach met stiff resistance from relegation-threatened Mainz on a day when both sides were forced to settle for a point.

Mainz 0-0 Borussia Mönchengladbach

Well aware of the urgency their precarious place in the standings represented, Mainz began the contest in sharp fashion, not allowing their opponents to settle into a rhythm. Still hopeful of earning a place in European competition next season, the visitors eventually shook off their Mainz shackles and fashioned a chance through returning attacker Raffael, who failed to find the target. The 05ers hopes were focused on getting high balls into the opposition box, but they hadn't counted on Jannik Vestergaard making a miraculous recovery from a foot fracture, the Dane easily dealing with the aerial threat.

It was not for nothing that Mainz collected the majority of their points tally at home this term, and going into the second half, Sandro Schwarz's side looked to take advantage of their Opel Arena home to get the better of the Foals. Pablo De Blasis tested Yann Sommer with a strong effort the goalkeeper couldn't hold onto while the visiting custodian was called into action again soon after, tipping Alexander Hack's effort onto the bar, before clinging on. With the game heading to a close, Rene Adler pulled off a fine stop to deny a Patrick Herrman shot.
