USA striker Josh Sargent’s first-team chance with Werder Bremen “will not be long” in coming according to the club’s sporting director, Thomas Schaaf.

The USMNT international, 18, has been a revelation for Die Grün-Weißen’s U23 side since swapping the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida for the north of Germany earlier this year, plundering five goals in eight games.

Schaaf was Bremen’s first-team coach from 1999 to 2013, and over the years gave Bundesliga debuts to Claudio Pizarro and Ailton among others. The 57-year-old is impressed with Sargent’s progress.

“I don’t think [Sargent’s first-team breakthrough] will be long,” he told Sport1. “We know what we have with him.”

Sargent signed his Bremen contract on turning 18 in February, but was ineligible to play in the Bundesliga until this August.
