Borussia Mönchengladbach came from behind to inflict the first defeat on Hoffenheim in Sinsheim since May 2016 with a 3-1 win.

Hoffenheim 1-3 Gladbach

Goals: 1-0 Demirbay (25'), 1-1 Hazard (61'), 1-2 Ginter (79'), 1-3 Vestergaard (82')

Gladbach made a bright start as Jannik Vestergaard headed wide from an early corner before Thorgan Hazard struck just wide of the far post with only Oliver Baumann to beat. Hoffenheim's response came from Nadiem Amiri, whose control and volley were not rewarded with a goal as the offside flag curtailed his celebrations, before Mark Uth levelled the tally of big chances, shooting inches over the bar. Back at the other end, Vincenzo Grifo curled an effort onto the far post and Matthias Ginter shot wide before Demirbay sent a sweet volley past Yann Sommer from the edge of the area to fire the hosts in front.

Nico Elvedi went close to his second Bundesliga goal with a header which Baumann palmed away, but Gladbach did not have to wait much longer before they did level with Grifo's intelligent cross to the far post chested down by Hazard, who subsequently swept the ball low inside the far post. Gladbach's counterattacking game continued to cause Hoffenheim problems, and the outstanding Grifo bamboozled the Hoffenheim defence twice before teeing up Ginter to put the guests in front. Sandro Wagner almost levelled immediately with a header just over the crossbar, before Vestergaard's header against his former club sealed victory late on for the Foals, for whom Reece Oxford made his Bundesliga debut in the closing stages.

Man of the Match

Grifo was involved in all of Gladbach's attacks and, in addition to striking the woodwork and having a free-kick tipped over by Baumann, he provided ingenious assists for Gladbach's first two goals.
