The schedule for the 2017/18 Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 fixtures is to be announced by the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga on 29 June. What better time, then, to look back at some of the most memorable opening-day debuts in Bundesliga history?
Up next: USA international Bobby Wood’s first ever appearance in a Hamburg shirt…
Wood’s HSV debut on Matchday 1 of the 2016/17 campaign will live long in the memory. Having been handed his first start for the club by then head coach Bruno Labbadia, Wood scored with his first shot at goal to put the Red Shorts 1-0 ahead against Ingolstadt. The visitors fought back to draw 1-1, but it was not enough to wipe the smile off Wood’s face at full time.
"I’m obviously really happy about my first ever Bundesliga goal," said the 24-year-old, who joined the northern club from Bundesliga 2 outfit Union Berlin in May 2016. "I took a risk, managed to get my body between the ball and the defender and came out on top."
Wood, who scored 17 league goals for Union in 2015/16, repeated the trick against Leverkusen the following week, scoring with his first attempt for the second week running in a 3-1 defeat at the BayArena.
