Hamburg - Hamburger SV have confirmed the signing of Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Emir Spahic.

'A top-quality player'

The 34-year-old, who was out of contract after being released by Bayer 04 Leverkusen in April, has signed a one-year deal with the Bundesliga ever-presents that will keep him in the Hanseatic metropolis until 30 June 2015.

“We’re delighted to be able to sign a proven defensive expert in Emir Spahic,” said Hamburg’s director of football Peter Knäbel. “Emir has the experience, quality and presence on the pitch to become a key player of our side, and he’ll also be able to help our younger players in particular.”

The Red Shorts’ chairman Dietmar Beiersdorfer was equally enthusiastic: “We’ve managed to acquire a top-quality player on a free transfer, and one who'll help give the team stability.”

Spahic appeared 49 times in the Bundesliga for Leverkusen, scoring three goals, while playing 14 games in the UEFA Champions League for the Rhineland side.
