Goals: 1-0 Jojic (40'), 1-1 Caiuby (77')
Cologne’s remarkable Bundesliga revival had taken in successive wins against Wolfsburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach and, most recently, Hamburg prior to the Billy Goats hosting Augsburg on Matchday 20. The basement side looked to continue that run here with Jojic testing his range before visiting goalkeeper Marwin Hitz denied in-form striker Simon Terodde. Christian Clemens then went close before Stefan Ruthenbeck’s men finally made their territorial advantage tell through Jojic’s smartly struck free-kick.
Unbeaten in their previous eight encounters against Cologne, Augsburg’s task here was made all the more difficult when the visitors lost Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Ja-Cheol Koo to respective injuries. Indeed, the game would almost certainly have been up for Manuel Baum’s men had hero Hitz not denied Kevin Danso from directing into his own net. Augsburg - 3-0 winners in the corresponding fixture on Matchday 3 - regained their composure to conjure a couple of quick-fire chances through Michael Gregoritsch and Alfred Finnbogason which Timo Horn blocked out. The pressure on the home goal increasing, an equaliser looked likely and it arrived after Brazilian Caiuby made up for a previous miss by rising highest to head past the helpless Horn.
- Jojic's first goal of the season came with his 29th shot of the campaign.
- Cologne remain unbeaten in 2018 with two wins and a draw.
- Cologne had previously failed to score in more than half of their Bundesliga encounters against Augsburg (five of nine).
- Augsburg are unbeaten in the last nine encounters with Cologne.
- Baum's side have never gone nine consecutive games unbeaten against any side in their Bundesliga history.
