Borussia Dortmund's winless Bundesliga run stretched to eight games after they were beaten 2-1 by Werder Bremen at Signal Iduna Park on Matchday 15.

Dortmund went into the game on the back of a seven-game winless run in their league, their worst domestic run of form for 17 years, and Bremen looked to pounce on the home side’s apparently fragile confidence. Zlatko Junuzovic’s speculative effort landed on the roof of Roman Bürki’s net after nine minutes, before the goalkeeper could only gather Max Kruse’s shot at the second attempt moments later.

If that was something of a fortunate escape, Borussia’s luck ran out on 25 minutes. Kruse’s pass out wide was collected by Maximilian Eggestein, who skipped inside onto his left foot and curled a delightful finish into the corner.

Their efforts were rewarded just before the hour-mark when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bundled in for his fifth goal in four games, but Bremen quickly regained the initiative, and after Kruse’s volley was saved, Theodor Gebre Selassie powered in a header to restore the visitors’ lead. Once again, Dortmund had to find a way back into the game and they should have been level on 72 minutes, only for Kagawa to see his shot from six yards cannon into Aubameyang and bounce over the bar.

The home side huffed and puffed but looked bereft of confidence. Schürrle could only shoot tamely at the goalkeeper in the closing stages, and Bremen could have easily added a third on the break. Florian Kohfeldt’s team celebrated wildly at the final whistle; the mood in the Dortmund camp could not have been more different.
