Despite Freiburg's superior ball possession, it was Augsburg who carried the greater scoring threat in a keenly contested first half. South Korea international duo Ja-Cheol Koo and Dong-Won Ji were making real nuisances of themselves in the final third, with both forcing excellent diving saves out of Freiburg custodian Alexander Schwolow.

Augsburg continued to ask questions of their hosts after the restart, but Freiburg weathered the storm and went ahead in the 66th minute when Maximilian Philipp curled in his fourth goal of the season. Philipp turned provider as Nils Petersen doubled Die Breisgauer's lead moments later, with Halil Altintop's well-taken reply six minutes from normal time proving little more than a consolation for the visitors.

Talking Point

With home form often the difference between staying up and going straight back down for promoted sides, Freiburg have made the Schwarzwald-Stadion into a real fortress. Christian Streich's men are unbeaten in ten home matches dating back to last season, and boast a 100 per cent winning record on their own patch so far this term.
