Pep Guardiola doffed his hat to predecessor Jupp Heynckes after FC Bayern München wrapped up a record fourth consecutive Bundesliga title on Saturday.

Heynckes retired in 2013 after winning an unprecedented Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League and DFB Cup treble, with Guardiola picking up the baton and going on to lift a hat-trick of Bundesliga crowns in his three seasons at the helm of German football's most successful club.

"Jupp, this is for you," Guardiola said after his side put the seal on the Bavarian outfit's 25th Bundesliga title with a hard-fought 2-1 win away to promoted FC Ingolstadt 04. "I would like to share this title with Jupp Heynckes. I learnt a lot from him. There are a lot of legends at Bayern, but for me he's one of the true legends at Bayern München. Together, we've done something really special."

Dortmund play their part

Bayern's historic feat was made all the more memorable by virtue of Borussia Dortmund's relentless pursuit of domestic honours. BVB had managed to cut the deficit at the summit to five points going into the penultimate weekend of 2015/16, only to suffer their first Bundesliga defeat of 2016 at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 33.

"Obviously massive compliments to Borussia Dortmund," Guardiola added, fresh from becoming the first non-German coach to win three Bundesliga titles and the first to win the league in his first three seasons in charge of a Bundesliga club. "They've had an unbelievable season. I also want to thank the fans and everyone at the club, but it's the players who are the most important."
