- Frankfurt's win over Mainz sends Hannover down.
- One of Frankfurt or Bremen guaranteed to reach 32 points, a tally out of bottom club Hannover's reach.
- Reds had prolonged their survival bid by drawing Ingolstadt.
Hannover 96’s relegation from the Bundesliga was confirmed on Sunday following Eintracht Frankfurt’s dramatic 2-1 win over 1. FSV Mainz 05 in Matchday 31’s final game.
Hannover were granted a stay of execution on Saturday after fighting back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with FC Ingolstadt 04, but the 96ers’ fate has now been sealed following Sunday’s result at Frankfurt’s Commerzbank Arena.
The Eagles remain 17th in the standings but their win over Mainz now means that at least one of themselves or SV Werder Bremen (16th place, 31 points) – who play each other on the season’s final day – are guaranteed to reach at least 32 points, a tally Hannover, currently with 22 points on the board, can no longer obtain.
"It's official: Frankfurt's win over Mainz means we'll be playing in Bundesliga 2 next season."
