Andre Schürrle admitted VfL Wolfsburg came up against a different animal in 1. FSV Mainz 05 as the Wolves could only follow up their 2-0 win over Real Madrid CF in the UEFA Champions League with a 1-1 draw against the 05ers on Saturday evening.

VfL Wolfsburg 1-1 1. FSV Mainz 05

Goals: 1-0 Schürrle (53'), 1-1 Jairo (66')

Andre Schürrle (Wolfsburg midfielder): "A draw here isn't enough for us. We're having a few disappointing results right now, and it's hard to explain why our season's been so inconsistent. We've dropped lots of points after Champions League matches and that shouldn't happen. Mainz played very differently to Real Madrid: Real gave us a lot of space, but Mainz defend from the front and gave us a lot less time on the ball. They made it really difficult for us."

Dieter Hecking (Wolfsburg coach): "I thought we played reasonably well in the first half. In the second half we got the goal, but then we made one mistake by losing the ball and conceded the equaliser. They're the type of moments where you're tearing your hair out as a coach. At the end of the day we have to live with the point."

Watch Mainz keeper Loris Karius' silky skills below:

Christian Clemens (Mainz midfielder): "We're disappointed with the result. We came here to win. We had some great chances and it was a shame we couldn't take one. We'll take the point though. We've played well in the last few weeks and we'll see where that takes us going forward."

Martin Schmidt (Mainz head coach): "I'm very happy with the performance. We created more chances and played really well and there's a tinge of disappointment as we could have got a bit more than a point today. We've put in some great performances this season so I think the players can allow themselves to dream of qualifying for Europe."
