FC Schalke 04 2-2 Borussia Dortmund

Goals: 0-1 Kagawa (49'), 1-1 Sane (51'), 1-2 Ginter (56'), 2-2 Huntelaar (pen. 66')

With eight changes from the side which held Liverpool in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, Dortmund took their time settling into the match. USA international Christian Pulisic, making only his second league start, managed that quicker than most and his angled shot only just missed the far post as Dortmund threatened to go in front first. Schalke then hit back with Leroy Sane's distant effort striking the right-hand upright and going wide, before Junior Caicara angled an effort just past of the other post.

The visitors enjoyed the better start to the second half and a delightful lob from Shinji Kagawa saw them take the lead. No sooner had their celebrations ended, however, Schalke were back on terms, Sane producing a controlled finish to lash past Roman Bürki. Matthias Ginter rose to head Dortmund back in front from Henrikh Mkhitaryan's free-kick just five minutes later, but there were plenty of legs still on this Revierderby. A foul by Sokratis Papastathopoulos on Huntelaar inside the area allowed the Dutchman to bring Schalke back on terms and earn them a point.

Man of the match

Sane ended an eight-game scoring drought with Schalke's first goal and seemed to rise to the derby occasion more than many, with a high-octane performance from start to finish.

Talking point

Tuchel's team selection was the source of plenty of discussion up to kick-off, but he will feel justified by his choices having got the answers he wanted from the players who have not been playing so often, while keeping the energy levels high in view of Thursday's trip to Liverpool. Nevertheless, his side are now a sizeable seven points behind league leaders FC Bayern München with just six games to play.

Match stats

  • Kagawa scored his fourth goal in his seventh Revierderby.
  • Sane netted his first goal since Matchday 19, after going eight matches without a goal.
  • Huntelaar, Kagawa and Ginter all found the net again after being on target in the reverse fixture.
